The NFL has expanded its uniform policy to allow teams the option of featuring a third helmet, following the adjustment made in 2021 that permitted teams to add a second helmet for the 2022 season. Teams undergoing redesigns for the upcoming season will automatically have the option for a third helmet, while other teams can opt for it starting from the 2025 season if they inform the league of their intentions by May 1 of this year.
However, there are restrictions in place. The second and third helmets must be historically compatible with the team’s classic uniform colors and designs if used together. Additionally, these alternate helmets can only be paired with authorized classic, alternate, or color rush uniforms, maintaining a sense of continuity and tradition.
The league’s decision also emphasizes health and safety concerns. Any alternate helmet must meet the same fit criteria as primary helmets and must be worn in practice for at least a week leading up to the game in which they will be used. Furthermore, they must match the make, model, and size of the primary helmet, ensuring consistent safety standards.
The NFL informed clubs today it has revised the uniform policy to allow teams a third helmet design, per source.

In terms of helmet safety, the NFL announced the introduction of 12 new helmets for the 2024 season, with eight of them being position-specific for quarterbacks, offensive linemen, and defensive linemen. Five of these new helmets have surpassed previous safety standards, marking significant progress in player protection.
Looking ahead, the league aims to introduce position-specific helmets for wide receivers and defensive backs by 2025, potentially offering alternate colors as well. This signifies a continued commitment to improving player safety and providing teams with more customization options within the boundaries of safety regulations.
The Denver Broncos’ official Twitter account expressed interest in the league’s decision, reflecting the broader intrigue surrounding the potential for new helmet designs and options in the NFL. These changes represent a balance between tradition, innovation, and player welfare within the league’s uniform and safety policies.
