Josey Jewell, the Carolina Panthers’ starting inside linebacker, was released on Tuesday as he continues to deal with the effects of a concussion sustained in Week 15 of last season. The injury occurred during an overtime victory against the Arizona Cardinals, and Jewell has remained in the league’s concussion protocol since.
Jewell signed a three-year, $22.75 million deal with the Panthers in March 2024 after six seasons with the Denver Broncos, who drafted him in the fourth round in 2018. Despite his release, the team has not closed the door on his potential return, should he fully recover.

A team spokesperson emphasized that Jewell made the decision with his health and teammates in mind, opting to step away to focus entirely on his recovery. The organization supported his choice, acknowledging the seriousness of head injuries and the importance of long-term well-being.
In Jewell’s absence, Christian Rozeboom, acquired on a one-year contract during the offseason, is expected to step into the starting role next to rookie linebacker Trevin Wallace. Jewell had 97 tackles for Carolina last season, even though he missed the final two games.
