Following a breakout season with the Dallas Cowboys, running back Rico Dowdle has signed a one-year deal worth up to $6.25 million with the Carolina Panthers. NFL Network insiders Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo confirmed the move, and the Panthers officially announced the signing.

Panthers Strengthen Backfield While Cowboys Face Running Back Depth Concerns

Dowdle’s arrival enhances an already competitive Panthers backfield. He joins Chuba Hubbard, who posted a career-high 1,195 rushing yards in 2024, and Jonathon Brooks, a talented rookie who has struggled with injuries. The move follows Carolina’s decision to release veteran running back Miles Sanders, signaling a shift in their offensive strategy.

With Dowdle leaving, the Cowboys’ running back depth has taken a hit. Dallas recently signed former Broncos RB Javonte Williams to a one-year, $3 million contract, but the team still lacks a clear lead rusher aside from Deuce Vaughn. This has fueled speculation that the Cowboys will target a running back in the upcoming NFL Draft.

From Undrafted Prospect to Key Offensive Weapon for the Carolina Panthers

A native of North Carolina, Dowdle played college football at South Carolina before entering the NFL as an undrafted free agent in 2020. After a modest 361-yard performance in 2023, he emerged as Dallas’ lead back in 2024, amassing 1,079 rushing yards and delivering four 100-yard games in the final six weeks of the season.

Dowdle now joins head coach Dave Canales’ offensive system, where his workload and role remain uncertain. However, with young quarterback Bryce Young leading the Panthers’ offense, Dowdle’s proven rushing ability will be a key asset as Carolina looks to improve in 2025.
