Sam LaPorta Nursing Calf Injury, Amon Ra St. Brown Fully Participates in Lions’ Practice

Detroit Lions’ promising rookie tight end, Sam LaPorta, was notably absent from Thursday’s practice due to a calf injury. LaPorta, a second-round draft pick, has quickly become one of quarterback Jared Goff’s most reliable targets in the team’s first five games.

He has made significant contributions, amassing 25 receptions for 289 yards and three touchdowns, including a standout performance with two scores in the recent victory against the Carolina Panthers.

The concerning aspect of LaPorta’s absence is that he was not listed on the practice report the previous day, leaving the exact timing of his injury unclear.

Lions head coach Dan Campbell is expected to provide further updates on LaPorta’s status for the upcoming game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after addressing reporters on Friday. However, mid-week injuries pose challenges for recovery, especially when practice time is limited.

If LaPorta is unable to play, the Lions will face additional challenges at the tight end position, with James Mitchell nursing a hamstring injury and missing practices throughout the week. While Brock Wright has stepped up admirably in the past, the team also has Darrell Daniels, who has been filling the fullback role due to Jason Cabinda’s placement on injured reserve.

On a positive note, star wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown, who was dealing with an abdomen injury, returned to practice and participated fully after being limited the previous day. St. Brown, eager to contribute, emphasized the team’s offensive capabilities, even without his presence in the previous game.

He expressed gratitude for the decision to rest him in the previous match, recognizing the importance of cautious management in injury situations.

In addition to LaPorta, rookie defensive back Brian Branch (ankle) and Jahmyr Gibbs (hamstring) remained sidelined. Notably, several other players, including Zonovan Knight (shoulder), Jonah Jackson (ankle), Frank Ragnow (toe/veteran rest), and cornerback Emmanuel Moseley (knee), were also absent from Thursday’s practice session.

However, there was a positive development as left tackle Taylor Decker was upgraded to a full participant, indicating progress in his recovery from an ankle injury. Decker’s return to full practice participation is a hopeful sign for the Lions as they prepare for their upcoming game.
