The Tennessee Titans have an extra day off after their early bye week, and coach Brian Callahan is ensuring that quarterback Will Levis takes this time to heal his throwing shoulder.
Callahan mentioned on Monday that Levis would not practice as the Titans (1-3) focus on self-evaluation during this time. The first-year coach said Levis spent a lot of his bye week getting treatment for his right shoulder, which he injured in the first quarter of last week’s win against Miami.
Callahan expects Levis to return to regular practice on Wednesday as they prepare for Sunday’s game against Indianapolis (2-3).
“We’ll see where he’s at when we practice Wednesday, but yeah, he’s definitely better than he was after the game,” Callahan stated.
Levis got hurt while reaching out for the ball on third down to try to gain a first down. The second-year quarterback was seen grimacing while throwing on the sideline, and backup Mason Rudolph helped lead the Titans to their first win.
“If he’s good to practice and ready to go, then he’s going to play. Unless it affects his ability to do his job, I don’t think there’ll be any discussion about it,” Callahan said regarding Levis.
“If it still hurts a lot and he’s having trouble throwing well, then that would change things. But we’ll see how the practice week goes. I feel pretty good about where he should be.”
Callahan and the Titans want to give Levis time to grow in his first season with a new coach and offense. The 33rd pick overall from Kentucky in 2023 is currently tied with Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson, the fourth overall pick in 2023 from Florida, for the most interceptions in the NFL with six.
Levis has also fumbled three times, leaving Tennessee last in the NFL for takeaway margin going into the bye. Now, the Titans at least share that disappointing ranking, tied with the Raiders at minus-7.
