New York Rangers and Columbus Blue Jackets

Igor Shesterkin made 27 saves and three more in the shootout to help the New York Rangers secure a vital 1-0 win against the Columbus Blue Jackets on Saturday night.

Vincent Trocheck scored in the second round of the shootout, which was the only goal of the skills competition. This victory improved the Rangers’ record to 5-0-2 in their last seven games, following a stretch where they lost 15 of 19 (4-15-0).

Shesterkin stopped Kent Johnson in the first round and Adam Fantilli in the second after Trocheck made a quick move on Daniil Tarasov and lifted the puck over the goalie’s stick. Shesterkin finished off his 17th career shutout with a diving pad save on Kirill Marchenko. This was Shesterkin’s second shutout of the season, his first being a 6-0 victory at Pittsburgh in the season opener.

Tarasov made 26 saves for the Blue Jackets, who saw their six-game winning streak end. Columbus had been 10-2-2 in their last 14 games, and this was their first loss in five shootouts this season.

Capitals 4, Penguins 1

Aliaksei Protas and Pierre-Luc Dubois each had a goal and an assist, while Logan Thompson made 18 saves in Washington’s win over Pittsburgh. Defenseman Jakob Chychrun also scored for the Capitals, who won their fourth straight. Brandon Duhaime added an empty-net goal.

Bryan Rust scored for the Penguins, and Joel Blomqvist, recalled from the American Hockey League, stopped 28 shots for Pittsburgh. The Penguins have lost four of their last five games.

Flames 3, Jets 1

Dustin Wolf made 38 saves to help Calgary end Winnipeg’s five-game point streak. Blake Coleman had a goal and two assists, and Matt Coronato and Andrei Kuzmenko also scored for Calgary. Adam Lowry was the only Jets player to score, and Eric Comrie made 19 saves for Winnipeg.

Islanders 4, Sharks 1

Brock Nelson scored the go-ahead goal in the second period to lead New York to a win over San Jose in Elmont, N.Y. Mathew Barzal, Noah Dobson, and Ryan Pulock also scored for the Islanders. Marcus Hogberg made 18 saves.

Barclay Goodrow scored for the Sharks, who are in last place in the Pacific Division after losing 16 of their last 20 games (4-15-1). Alexandar Georgiev stopped 27 shots.

Flyers 3, Devils 1

Bobby Brink scored the game-winning goal with 7:16 left in the third period to help Philadelphia beat New Jersey. Matvei Michkov and Travis Konecny also scored, and Samuel Ersson made 12 saves for the Flyers, who are 4-0-1 in their last five games.

Dougie Hamilton scored for the Devils, and Jake Allen made 15 saves. New Jersey has lost eight of their last 10 games (2-5-3).

Philadelphia Flyers topped the visiting Detroit Red Wings

Kraken 4, Kings 2

Jaden Schwartz scored a hat trick and Joey Daccord made 28 saves, shutting down Los Angeles’ strong third-period push to give Seattle a win at home. Chandler Stephenson added a goal, and Kaapo Kakko had three assists.

Adrian Kempe and Jordan Spence scored for the Kings, who went 2-3-0 on their five-game trip. Darcy Kuemper made 18 saves.

Avalanche 6, Stars 3

Cale Makar scored twice, and Artturi Lehkonen had two goals and two assists as Colorado defeated Dallas in Denver. Jonathan Drouin and Casey Mittelstadt each had a goal and two assists. Makar and Drouin both scored their 100th career goals.

Jason Robertson had two goals and an assist for Dallas, while Matt Duchene also scored. Casey DeSmith made 30 saves for the Stars.

Panthers 3, Ducks 0

Spencer Knight made 34 saves to lead Florida to a shutout win over Anaheim in Sunrise, Fla. Jesper Boqvist, Anton Lundell, and Gustav Forsling scored for the Panthers. Knight’s second shutout of the season helped Florida, despite Sam Reinhart’s ejection in the first period.

John Gibson made 42 saves for Anaheim in the loss.

Maple Leafs 7, Canadiens 3

Toronto came back from three goals down to defeat Montreal. Oliver Ekman-Larsson had a goal and two assists, while Joseph Woll made 32 saves for the Maple Leafs. Bobby McCann added a goal and an assist, and five others scored for Toronto.

Patrik Laine had a goal and an assist for the Canadiens, and Sam Montembeault made 27 saves. Montreal had a two-game winning streak stopped.

Canucks 3, Oilers 2

Quinn Hughes scored twice on the power play, and J.T. Miller had two assists as Vancouver beat Edmonton. Danton Heinen also scored, and Thatcher Demko made 13 saves for the Canucks.

Utah Hockey Club 4, Blues 2

Clayton Keller had a goal and three assists to help Utah beat St. Louis in Salt Lake City. Logan Cooley had a goal and two assists, and Michael Kesselring and Nick Schmaltz also scored. Connor Ingram made 22 saves.

Tyler Tucker and Jake Neighbours scored for the Blues, and Jordan Binnington made 29 saves.

Predators 6, Wild 2

Filip Forsberg scored twice and added two assists to lead Nashville past Minnesota. Forsberg’s four-point game helped the Predators, who also got goals from Colton Sissons, Brady Skjei, Steven Stamkos, and Fedor Svechkov.

Matt Boldy scored and had an assist for the Wild. Marc-Andre Fleury made 32 saves for Minnesota.

Senators 6, Bruins 5 (SO)

Ottawa came from two goals down to beat Boston in a shootout. Josh Norris scored late in the third, and Tim Stutzle netted the only shootout goal to give Ottawa the win. Leevi Merilainen, despite allowing five goals, stopped all three of Boston’s shootout attempts.

David Pastrnak had a goal and two assists for the Bruins.

Lightning 5, Red Wings 1

Nikita Kucherov scored a goal and added two assists, and the Lightning erupted for four goals in the second period to beat Detroit. Brayden Point also scored, and Darren Raddysh had a power-play goal. Cam Talbot allowed five goals on 16 shots for the Red Wings.
