Sidney Crosby moved up in the NHL record books, and Bryan Rust sparked a four-goal surge in the first period as the Pittsburgh Penguins defeated the Edmonton Oilers 5-3 on Thursday. This was Pittsburgh’s first win over Edmonton in more than five years.

Crosby had a goal and two assists, passing Joe Sakic for ninth place on the NHL’s all-time points list with 1,643 points. Sakic finished his Hall of Fame career with 1,641 points. Crosby also recorded his 184th three-point game, breaking a tie with Phil Esposito and Mark Messier for fifth in NHL history.

Rust added a goal and two assists, all in the first period. Drew O’Connor contributed a goal and an assist for Pittsburgh, and Rickard Rakell and Kevin Hayes also scored. Marcus Pettersson had two assists, and Alex Nedeljkovic made 40 saves, a season-high.

Leon Draisaitl scored twice for Edmonton, raising his NHL-leading goal total to 30. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins added a goal, and Connor McDavid assisted on all three of Edmonton’s goals. Stuart Skinner made 21 saves.

Avalanche 6, Wild 1
Nathan MacKinnon, Mikko Rantanen, and Logan O’Connor each had a goal and an assist as Colorado easily beat Minnesota in Saint Paul, Minn. Ross Colton, Parker Kelly, and Artturi Lehkonen each added one goal. Jonathan Drouin and Josh Manson had two assists each. Mackenzie Blackwood stopped 24 of 25 shots. Zach Bogosian scored for the Wild, whose four-game winning streak was snapped.

Sabres 4, Senators 0
Jack Quinn scored twice, and Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen made 35 saves as Buffalo won at Ottawa. It was Luukkonen’s second shutout of the season and the seventh of his career. Ryan McLeod had a goal and two assists for Buffalo, which is 5-2-1 since a 13-game losing streak. Anton Forsberg made 17 saves for Ottawa, which has lost six of seven.

Ottawa Senators (NHL)

Lightning 4, Bruins 1
Anthony Cirelli and Michael Eyssimont scored in the second period as Tampa Bay defeated Boston, handing the Bruins a season-worst sixth consecutive loss. Ryan McDonagh had two assists for Tampa Bay to surpass 400 career points. Brayden Point scored the final goal, recording his 600th point. Brandon Hagel had a goal and an assist, Nikita Kucherov added two assists, and Andrei Vasilevskiy made 27 saves. Mason Lohrei scored for Boston. Jeremy Swayman made 27 saves but lost his fifth straight game.

Rangers 3, Devils 2 (OT)
Sam Carrick scored with 2:12 left in overtime to give the Rangers a win over New Jersey. Adam Fox and Artemi Panarin scored power-play goals for New York, who extended their point streak to three games. Igor Shesterkin made 21 saves. Jack Hughes had a goal and an assist for the Devils, and Jesper Bratt also scored. Jacob Markstrom made 29 saves.

Hurricanes 6, Maple Leafs 3
Jordan Staal scored a hat trick as Carolina came from behind to beat Toronto in Raleigh, N.C. Staal’s hat trick was his fifth career one, including one in the postseason, and his first since April 2022. Eric Robinson, Jackson Blake, and Seth Jarvis also scored for Carolina. Pyotr Kochetkov made 30 saves. Nicholas Robertson, William Nylander, and Auston Matthews scored for Toronto, which had its five-game winning streak snapped. Joseph Woll made 28 saves.

Blue Jackets 6, Kraken 2
Denton Mateychuk scored his first career NHL goal, and Luca Del Bel Belluz scored in his season debut as Columbus beat Seattle. Sean Kuraly, Zach Werenski, Kent Johnson, and Kirill Marchenko also scored for Columbus. James van Riemsdyk had two assists, and Elvis Merzlikins made 29 saves. Eeli Tolvanen scored twice for Seattle, which has lost four straight games. Philipp Grubauer was pulled after allowing five goals on 19 shots.

Seattle Kraken (NHL)

Islanders 4, Golden Knights 0
Ilya Sorokin recorded 30 saves for his 20th career shutout, and Brock Nelson had a goal and an assist as New York won in Las Vegas. Anders Lee, Bo Horvat, and Casey Cizikas also scored. Sorokin’s shutout was his second of the season. Adin Hill made 17 saves for Vegas, which had a three-game win streak broken.

Blues 6, Ducks 2
Robert Thomas scored twice to lead St. Louis past Anaheim. Pavel Buchnevich and Jordan Kyrou each had a goal and an assist. Dylan Holloway and Tyler Tucker also scored for the Blues, who have scored 37 goals in their past eight games. Brayden Schenn had two assists, and Joel Hofer made 21 saves. Nikita Nesterenko and Sam Colangelo scored for Anaheim. Lukas Dostal allowed six goals on 22 shots before being replaced by John Gibson, who stopped all 12 shots he faced.

Stars 4, Flyers 1
Casey DeSmith made 27 saves, and four Dallas players scored as the Stars won their sixth straight game at Philadelphia. Mavrik Bourque, Roope Hintz, Wyatt Johnston, and Miro Heiskanen scored for Dallas, which is 7-0-1 in its last eight games. Jason Robertson had two assists. Morgan Frost scored for Philadelphia, which has lost four straight. Samuel Ersson made 19 saves.
