Washington Capitals and New York Rangers

Dylan Strome scored a goal and added two assists, while Alex Ovechkin scored his 872nd career goal in the Washington Capitals’ 7-4 victory against the New York Rangers on Saturday.

Logan Thompson made 29 saves for the Capitals as Ovechkin moved closer to Wayne Gretzky’s NHL record of 894 goals.

With Washington ahead by one goal, Ovechkin scored off a faceoff, backhanding a loose puck under Jonathan Quick’s right pad to make it 5-3 at 10:50 of the third period, bringing him within 22 goals of Gretzky.

The Rangers twice got within a goal in the third period but could not tie the game, losing for the 16th time in 21 games since Nov. 21. Quick finished with 21 saves.

Maple Leafs 6, Bruins 4

Matthew Knies scored his first career hat trick and added two assists as Toronto defeated Boston, handing the Bruins their third straight loss.

Mitch Marner also had four assists and an empty-net goal for Toronto, which has won three games in a row. Auston Matthews returned from an upper-body injury after missing six games, scoring an empty-net goal and two assists. David Pastrnak scored twice for the Bruins.

Predators 4, Flames 1

Ryan O’Reilly scored a hat trick to lead Nashville past Calgary, giving the Predators their second win in two nights and just their fifth road win of the season.

Fedor Svechkov added one goal and one assist, while Filip Forsberg had two assists. Justus Annunen stopped 31 shots, including 11 in the first period when the Flames had a major edge in play but couldn’t take the lead.

Mikael Backlund scored for the Flames, who have lost three of their last four games. Dustin Wolf made 24 saves.

Calgary Flames (NHL)

Red Wings 4, Jets 2

Dylan Larkin scored twice to lead Detroit to a victory over Winnipeg, knocking the Jets from the top spot in the NHL standings.

Lucas Raymond had a goal and two assists, and Alex DeBrincat also scored for Detroit, which has won four in a row and improved to 4-1-0 under new coach Todd McLellan.

Josh Morrissey and Nikolaj Ehlers scored for Winnipeg, which lost its third straight game. The Jets had led the NHL with 56 points but were passed by Vegas later that day after their loss.

Blue Jackets 6, Blues 4

Dmitri Voronkov scored twice to lead Columbus past St. Louis for its fifth win in eight games.

Sean Monahan and Ivan Provorov had three assists for Columbus, and Elvis Merzlikins made 29 saves.

Jordan Kyrou had a goal and two assists for the Blues, while Brayden Schenn and Cam Fowler each had a goal and one assist. The Blues lost for the second time in six games.

Sharks 3, Devils 2

Cody Ceci scored with 25 seconds left to help San Jose beat New Jersey, earning the Sharks their second straight win after eight consecutive losses.

Nikolai Kovalenko and Macklin Celebrini also scored, and Yaroslav Askarov made 28 saves for San Jose.

Nico Hischier scored on his 26th birthday, and Paul Cotter also scored for the Devils. Jacob Markstrom made 21 saves, and New Jersey has lost four in a row.

San Jose Sharks (NHL)

Wild 4, Hurricanes 0

Mats Zuccarello scored two goals, including an empty-netter, and Filip Gustavsson made 21 saves to lead Minnesota over Carolina in Raleigh, N.C.

Matt Boldy had a goal and two assists, and Joel Eriksson Ek also scored for the Wild. Marco Rossi had four assists, a career high. Gustavsson earned his third shutout of the season.

Pyotr Kochetkov made 23 saves for Carolina, which lost its fourth game in the last six.

Canadiens 2, Avalanche 1 (SO)

Cole Caufield and Kirby Dach scored in the shootout to lead Montreal past Colorado, completing a six-game road trip with four wins.

Caufield also scored Montreal’s lone goal in regulation, while Jakub Dobes made 22 saves through overtime and two more in the shootout.

Mikko Rantanen scored for Colorado, and Mackenzie Blackwood made 23 saves. The Avalanche’s six-game winning streak ended.

Golden Knights 3, Sabres 1

Jack Eichel had a goal and an assist, and Adin Hill made 23 saves as Vegas moved into the NHL points lead with a win over Buffalo in Las Vegas.

Mark Stone and Tanner Laczynski also scored, and Tanner Pearson added two assists for Vegas, which won its eighth game in the last nine. The Golden Knights lead the Winnipeg Jets by one point.

Jason Zucker scored for Buffalo, and James Reimer made 30 saves. Buffalo’s three-game win streak against Vegas was snapped.

Vegas Golden Knights (NHL)

Kings 2, Lightning 1

Los Angeles won its fourth straight game, with Adrian Kempe scoring the game-winner with 5:48 left in regulation to beat Tampa Bay.

Kempe’s team-leading 19th goal extended his point streak to five games. Mikey Anderson also scored for Los Angeles, which won its ninth consecutive home game.

Victor Hedman scored for Tampa Bay, which lost its third straight. Andrei Vasilevskiy made 19 saves.

Oilers 4, Kraken 2

Leon Draisaitl had a goal and an assist, and Viktor Arvidsson contributed two assists as Edmonton beat Seattle for its seventh straight win against the Pacific Division rival.

Vasily Podkolzin, Jeff Skinner, and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins also scored for the Oilers, who won their third straight game. Calvin Pickard made 15 saves.

Chandler Stephenson and Jaden Schwartz scored for Seattle, which had its three-game point streak broken. Philipp Grubauer made 28 saves.

Stars 3, Utah Hockey Club 2 (OT)

Thomas Harley scored the overtime winner as Dallas beat Utah, winning its third straight game against the division rival.

Harley scored at 3:01 of the extra period off a Matt Duchene pass. Jamie Benn and Oskar Back also scored for Dallas, and Duchene and Wyatt Johnston each had two assists. Jake Oettinger made 33 saves.

Matias Maccelli scored twice for Utah, which has won just one of its last seven games. Karel Vejmelka made 26 saves but took his third loss against the Stars this season.
