Dan Vladar recorded his second shutout of the season, leading the Calgary Flames to a 3-0 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets, breaking a four-game losing streak. The Flames honored the family of Johnny Gaudreau, who had played nine seasons with Calgary before joining the Blue Jackets in the 2022-23 season.
Gaudreau and his brother Matthew tragically passed away in a bike accident on August 29. Vladar, who wore a special mask with pictures of both brothers, made 16 saves for his fourth career shutout.
Rasmus Andersson, Kevin Bahl, and Yegor Sharangovich scored for Calgary, with Mikael Backlund adding two assists. Elvis Merzlikins saved 19 shots for Columbus, who lost for the first time in seven games (5-1-1).
Avalanche 5, Sabres 4
Nathan MacKinnon scored two goals and added an assist as Colorado rallied from a 4-0 deficit to defeat Buffalo. MacKinnon’s performance helped the Avalanche score five unanswered goals. Joel Kiviranta, Logan O’Connor, and Artturi Lehkonen also scored.
Alexandar Georgiev allowed four goals on eight shots, then Scott Wedgewood replaced him and stopped all 22 shots he faced. Buffalo led 4-0 with two goals from Tage Thompson and one each from JJ Peterka and Beck Malenstyn. Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen made 36 saves.
Penguins 5, Panthers 4 (OT)
Bryan Rust scored 91 seconds into overtime to give Pittsburgh a 5-4 victory over Florida, despite the Penguins blowing a 4-1 third-period lead. Evgeni Malkin, Marcus Pettersson, Owen Pickering, and Kris Letang also scored for the Penguins. Tristan Jarry saved 37 shots, while Blake Lizotte added two assists. Florida’s Matthew Tkachuk had a career-high four points with two goals and two assists, while Sam Bennett scored for the fourth straight game. Spencer Knight made 11 saves.
Bruins 3, Red Wings 2 (OT)
Pavel Zacha scored in overtime to give Boston a 3-2 win over Detroit. Nikita Zadorov and Justin Brazeau also scored for the Bruins. Brazeau’s power-play goal tied the game with 10:28 left in regulation. Joonas Korpisalo made 25 saves.
Detroit’s Lucas Raymond scored both goals, marking his seventh in the last seven games and extending his point streak to eight. Simon Edvinsson had two assists, and Ville Husso stopped 32 shots. Detroit is 0-1-2 in its last three games.
Wild 3, Canucks 2 (OT)
Kirill Kaprizov scored in the final minute of overtime to give Minnesota a 3-2 win over Vancouver. Frederick Gaudreau and Jake Middleton also scored for Minnesota, which won its fourth straight game, two of them in overtime. Filip Gustavsson made 30 saves. Vancouver’s Quinn Hughes and Jake DeBrusk scored. Vancouver’s last three games have gone to overtime, with two wins and one loss. Kevin Lankinen saved 26 shots.
Canadiens 2, Islanders 1 (OT)
Nick Suzuki scored the overtime winner and added an assist as Montreal defeated the New York Islanders 2-1. Patrik Laine, in his Canadiens debut, scored the other goal. Laine had missed the first 24 games of the season due to a knee injury. Sam Montembeault made 30 saves. Anders Lee scored for the Islanders, and Ilya Sorokin stopped 25 shots. New York has been outscored 44-22 in the third period and overtime this season.
Sharks 2, Capitals 1 (OT)
William Eklund scored a power-play goal 39 seconds into overtime to give San Jose a 2-1 win over Washington. Tyler Toffoli scored late in the first period, and Macklin Celebrini earned an assist on Eklund’s overtime goal, extending his point streak to five games. Mackenzie Blackwood made 27 saves for the Sharks, who have won four of their last five games. Nic Dowd scored for Washington, and Thompson made 29 saves. The Capitals’ four-game winning streak was halted.
Golden Knights 1, Oilers 0
Adin Hill stopped 28 shots to lead Vegas to a 1-0 win over Edmonton. Hill’s second shutout of the season was the ninth of his career. Ivan Barbashev scored the only goal of the game, his fifth in six games. Stuart Skinner made 15 saves for the Oilers, who failed to win four straight games for the first time this season. This was the fourth time Edmonton has been shut out this year.
Kraken 4, Hurricanes 2
Jaden Schwartz and Yanni Gourde each had a goal and an assist to lead Seattle to a 4-2 win over Carolina. Eeli Tolvanen and Brandon Tanev also scored, and Matty Beniers added two assists. Joey Daccord made 17 saves for the Kraken, who ended a three-game losing streak. Martin Necas scored a goal and had an assist, and Eric Robinson also scored for Carolina. Pyotr Kochetkov made 24 saves. The Hurricanes have lost their third straight game.
Blues 4, Jets 1
Jordan Kyrou scored two goals, and Dylan Holloway and Robert Thomas each had one goal and one assist to lead St. Louis to a 4-1 win over Winnipeg. Kyrou and Holloway scored 39 seconds apart late in the second period. St. Louis outshot Winnipeg 32-23 and extended their unbeaten streak to 3-0-1 under new coach Jim Montgomery.
Joel Hofer made 22 saves for the Blues. Mark Scheifele scored for Winnipeg, and Connor Hellebuyck stopped 28 shots. The Jets are 3-7-0 after a strong 15-1 start to the season.
