Connor Bedard is spending his summer in Vancouver but finds himself growing restless as the days drag by. With Blackhawks training camp still weeks away, he is eagerly anticipating the return to the ice. The extended offseason stretching back to mid-April has only intensified his desire to be back in a competitive environment. Although this impatience is challenging, Bedard sees it as a sign of his passion and hunger for the game.
Focused Offseason Helps Bedard Improve Speed, Adjust Training, and Test New Equipment
Bedard turned down an invitation to represent Canada at the World Championships, choosing instead to dedicate the offseason to individual development. Now 20 years old, he believes this extra time has been instrumental in addressing key areas of improvement, particularly his speed. He focused heavily on physical training in May, viewing the sacrifice of international play as necessary to gain an edge for his upcoming third season in the NHL.

One of Bedard’s major focuses this offseason has been regaining his skating speed, which declined significantly from his rookie season. After acknowledging a flawed approach to training last summer, he revamped his regimen, both on and off the ice.
He also switched to a stiffer stick flex to improve his faceoff success and shot power. Training alongside top young players like Macklin Celebrini and Kent Johnson has given him a competitive edge and a practical way to test these changes.
Bedard Embraces Leadership Role Amid Rebuild, Stresses Loyalty to Blackhawks and Fans
Despite leading the Blackhawks in scoring last season, Bedard’s numbers plateaued, largely due to his reduced speed and lack of offensive-zone separation. Still, he remains central to Chicago’s rebuild, which continues without major roster upgrades.
While the team enters camp without clear-cut first-line wingers, Bedard embraces the developmental stage, seeing it as a chance for the younger core, including himself, to grow together. He remains optimistic and committed to the team’s long-term vision.
Although eligible for a contract extension, Bedard is in no rush to finalize one, expressing confidence in his relationship with the organization. What stands out is his vocal dedication to staying in Chicago, a rare move for a typically reserved player.
By proactively affirming his commitment, he aimed to silence speculation before it started. Bedard emphasized the mutual appreciation between himself and the fan base, believing that strong bonds off the ice are just as crucial as success on it.
