Evgeny Kuznetsov has become a notable name in NHL offseason discussions following his recent contract termination with KHL club SKA Saint Petersburg. Now an unrestricted free agent, Kuznetsov is reportedly attracting interest from multiple NHL teams, as confirmed by his agent, Shumi Babaev.
The veteran Russian center is weighing his options for a potential return to North America, though no firm destination has been confirmed yet.
Ovechkin Weighs In As Kuznetsov Eyes Return After Mixed Season And Injuries
Alex Ovechkin, Kuznetsov’s longtime teammate on the Washington Capitals, was asked about the possibility of a reunion. While Ovechkin acknowledged his close relationship with Kuznetsov, he stressed that any decision would ultimately lie with the player and his agent.

Kuznetsov previously spent 11 seasons with the Capitals before being traded to the Carolina Hurricanes at the 2024 trade deadline. Ovechkin made it clear he is not involved in roster decisions but expressed hope that Kuznetsov finds the right fit.
Kuznetsov’s final NHL season was underwhelming statistically, with only 24 points in 63 games. However, he showed flashes of his former playmaking ability in the KHL, where he notched 37 points in 39 games with SKA. Despite this resurgence, his season was marred by two concussions, raising concerns about his durability and consistency going forward.
Kuznetsov Stays Close To Washington, But Capitals Prioritize Youth Over Reunion Plans
Despite the uncertain future, Kuznetsov has remained connected to the Washington area. He’s been seen spending time with former Capitals teammate Alex Alexeyev and was even spotted playing beer league hockey at MedStar Capitals Iceplex—Washington’s former practice facility. These appearances have fueled speculation, but no official talks with the Capitals have been confirmed.
While fans may be curious about a possible return, the Capitals appear to be focused on younger talent. General Manager Chris Patrick emphasized earlier this offseason that the team aims to move in a younger direction, which doesn’t align with bringing back the 33-year-old Kuznetsov.
Meanwhile, Kuznetsov’s agent insists that returning to Washington is not a priority, and the player isn’t interested in signing a professional tryout. A resolution is expected by early August.
