Jesper Eliasson’s NHL Hopes Fade as Red Wings Draft Gamble Lands Him in Polish League

The Detroit Red Wings’ selection of Jesper Eliasson in the third round of the 2018 NHL Entry Draft illustrates the inherent uncertainty of evaluating goaltending talent.

Former director of amateur scouting Tyler Wright openly admitted the draft process for goalies is often a gamble, stating it’s about getting them into the system and hoping they separate themselves. Unfortunately for Eliasson, the separation was not in the direction the Red Wings had hoped for.

From World Junior Medalist to Polish League in Eliasson’s Unexpected Career Decline

Eliasson initially showed promise, particularly with his performance at the 2020 IIHF World Junior Championship, where he helped Sweden secure a bronze medal. Despite these early glimpses of potential, his professional trajectory took a sharp decline. The Red Wings ultimately chose not to offer him an NHL contract after his inconsistent performances and lack of development.

Eliasson’s pro career has taken him across various leagues and countries. In Sweden, he played mainly in the second and third divisions, with only a single appearance in the SHL. His international journey saw stops in Austria, Norway, and now Poland, where he has signed with GTS Katowice, a successful team in the Polish league. This marks a significant step down from the expectations once placed upon him as a potential NHL goaltender.

More Red Wings Draft Picks Struggle to Stick in NHL, Seek Careers Abroad

Jesper Eliasson isn’t the only Red Wings draftee to fall short of expectations. Forward Robert Mastrosimone, a 2019 second-round pick, was also not offered an NHL contract. Despite being part of GM Steve Yzerman’s first draft class, Mastrosimone’s production in the AHL has been underwhelming. He is now continuing his career with the Charlotte Checkers after stints with the Toronto Marlies.

Several other Red Wings draft picks have taken unconventional career paths. Ryan O’Reilly is headed to Greenville in the ECHL, while Adam Almquist was released by Kolner Haie in Germany. Kirill Tyutyayev remains in the ECHL with Fort Wayne, and Brady Gilmour is moving to the UK’s EIHL.

Meanwhile, Mattias Backman was released in Norway, and Gustav Berglund has signed with Denmark’s Rodovre Red Bulls. These developments underscore the volatile and often unpredictable nature of NHL draft picks, particularly those selected in later rounds.
