JJ Peterka, formerly with the Buffalo Sabres, got a preview of the Utah Mammoth during a game in Salt Lake City on March 20. Now, the 23-year-old forward is embracing a new chapter in his career by joining Utah’s NHL franchise.
Traded on June 26 in exchange for defenseman Michael Kesselring and forward Josh Doan, Peterka immediately signed a five-year, $38.5 million contract. He views the timing and team composition as ideal, particularly because of the young, skilled roster and the potential to develop and succeed alongside them.
Utah’s Inaugural Season Showed Promise with Youthful Talent and Strong Organizational Commitment
The Utah Mammoth, created after purchasing the Arizona Coyotes’ assets in April 2024, had a promising inaugural season with a 38-31-13 record, finishing just outside playoff contention. Despite missing the Stanley Cup Playoffs, the team showcased significant potential.
For Peterka, Utah’s organizational commitment stood out — especially their investment in a new practice facility set to open on September 1. He also appreciated the energetic fan base and the intimate atmosphere of the team’s home arena.

Utah’s youthful core was a driving force in its early success. Players like Logan Cooley, Dylan Guenther, and captain Clayton Keller delivered standout performances, making Utah an attractive destination for Peterka. He expressed admiration for their individual skill and offensive creativity, recalling how impressive they were even when playing against them.
Peterka himself comes in with strong credentials, having recorded a career-high 68 points in 77 games last season, which puts him on par with Utah’s current top producers.
Utah Blends Youth and Experience as Peterka Adjusts and Eyes Immediate Impact
Mammoth GM Bill Armstrong acknowledged that Peterka will need time to adjust to Utah’s systems and culture but believes he has the potential to make an immediate impact in the top two lines. His scoring consistency and competitive drive make him a valuable addition to the roster.
Armstrong emphasized a gradual integration process, allowing Peterka to build chemistry with teammates and adapt to the new environment while contributing on the ice.
Utah continued to bolster its roster after acquiring Peterka, adding veterans Nate Schmidt, Brandon Tanev, and Vitek Vanecek in free agency. The team aims to blend youthful energy with experienced leadership to accelerate their competitive growth.
Peterka expressed enthusiasm about learning from seasoned players and appreciated the franchise’s aggressive approach to roster building. With a long-term commitment in place, Peterka is excited about Utah’s direction and eager to help the Mammoth become a playoff contender.
