The New York Rangers have secured defenseman Matthew Robertson with a two-year contract extension, as announced by President and General Manager Chris Drury. The move signals the organization’s continued investment in the development of the 24-year-old blueliner, who has steadily progressed through their system.
This extension gives Robertson more opportunity to contribute at the NHL level following a strong showing in the AHL and limited but promising NHL experience.
Robertson had a standout year in 2024-25 with the Hartford Wolf Pack, the Rangers’ AHL affiliate. In 60 games, he tallied one goal and 24 assists, totaling a career-high 25 points and leading all Wolf Pack defensemen in both assists and points.
His performance earned him a brief call-up to the NHL, where he made his debut on April 14, 2025, against the Florida Panthers. In his two NHL appearances, he posted a solid plus-three rating, suggesting strong defensive reliability.

Robertson’s Size, Skill, and Growth Signal Readiness for a Bigger NHL Role Soon
Over four seasons with Hartford, Robertson has developed into a dependable two-way defenseman. He has accumulated 80 points (11 goals, 69 assists) in 221 AHL games, showing gradual improvement each year.
He reached his AHL career-high in goals (five) during the 2022-23 season and has contributed in playoff situations as well, recording one assist in 10 Calder Cup Playoff games. His steady upward trajectory points to potential for increased NHL involvement moving forward.
Standing at 6-foot-4 and weighing 209 pounds, Robertson brings size and poise to the Rangers’ defensive pipeline. Originally selected by the team in the second round (49th overall) of the 2019 NHL Draft, he has steadily climbed the ranks and appears ready to compete for a larger role. With this contract extension, the Rangers are clearly betting on his continued development and possible transition into a full-time NHL defenseman.
