The New York Rangers have finalized a trade, sending defenseman Ryan Lindgren and forward Jimmy Vesey to the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for Juuso Parssinen, Calvin de Haan, and two draft picks in the 2025 NHL Draft (a second- and a fourth-round selection).
As part of the deal, the Rangers will retain 50% of Lindgren’s $4.5 million salary cap hit, with his contract set to expire this summer. The Rangers will receive the better second-round pick between Carolina’s and their own, as well as the better fourth-round pick between Colorado’s and Vancouver’s.
Rangers Add Depth While Making Tough Decisions for Playoff Push and Future
Despite being outside a playoff position entering the weekend, the Rangers still believe they can make a push for the postseason. By acquiring Parssinen and de Haan, they are adding depth to their lineup for the final stretch of the season. Parssinen, 24, is a forward New York has targeted in past trade discussions, particularly during his time with the Nashville Predators.
De Haan, a veteran with 676 NHL games, brings immediate reinforcement to the Rangers’ blue line, which is currently missing Adam Fox due to injury. Fox is expected to return soon, providing additional support for the team’s playoff aspirations.

Trading Lindgren was a tough decision for the Rangers, as he had spent his entire seven-year NHL career in New York and was considered a heart-and-soul player. The team admired his dedication and defensive grit, but with his contract expiring this summer, they recognized the need to recoup assets rather than risk losing him for nothing. While parting with Lindgren was difficult, the organization believes it was a necessary move to ensure it remained competitive while also preparing for the future.
Avalanche Strengthen Roster for Playoff Push with Key Defensive and Forward Additions
For the Colorado Avalanche, this trade is part of a larger effort to bolster their roster ahead of the playoffs. The team recently made the bold decision to trade Mikko Rantanen to the Carolina Hurricanes, and the second-round pick involved in this trade originally came from that deal.
By acquiring Lindgren and Vesey, Colorado adds defensive stability and forward depth, which will be crucial for their postseason campaign. Lindgren, in particular, brings strong defensive skills and a physical presence that could prove valuable in high-intensity playoff matchups.
This trade highlights the different directions of the two franchises. The Rangers are making a strategic move to stay in the playoff race while also gaining future assets, whereas the Avalanche is focused on immediate success, hoping to make a deep playoff run this season. Both teams believe they have improved their rosters in meaningful ways, and the performance of these players down the stretch will ultimately determine the trade’s success for each organization.
