Minnesota Wild owner Craig Leipold expressed optimism about reaching a new deal with star forward Kirill Kaprizov, saying the two sides are “not that far off.” Leipold noted that once Kaprizov returns and feels the excitement from the city and fans, discussions are expected to move in a positive direction. The owner’s confidence signals that contract negotiations are progressing toward resolution ahead of a pivotal season.

Kaprizov Nears Free Agency as Wild Prioritize Extension Amid Injury-Tested Brilliance

Kaprizov, 28, is in the final year of a five-year, $45 million deal signed in September 2021. He is set to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season if no extension is agreed upon. Since July 1, Kaprizov has been eligible to sign an eight-year contract, which general manager Bill Guerin previously labeled as the organization’s top priority. However, if he waits until July 2026, he would only be eligible for a seven-year deal under NHL rules.

Despite missing significant time due to injury last season, Kaprizov remained one of Minnesota’s most effective players. In 41 games, he recorded a plus-19 rating, 25 goals, and 56 points. He returned late in the season to contribute immediately, notching four points in the final four regular-season games and adding nine points in six playoff appearances. His resilience underscored his importance to the team’s success.

Kaprizov’s Historic Impact and Looming Record Contract Signal Bright Future for Wild

Since being drafted in the fifth round in 2015, Kaprizov has become the Wild’s offensive centerpiece. He has led the team in scoring in four of his five seasons, including winning the Calder Trophy as rookie of the year in 2020-21. His career totals of 386 points and 185 goals place him among the NHL’s elite, ranking 15th in points and tied for eighth in goals since his debut. Such production makes him indispensable to Minnesota’s long-term ambitions.

Leipold emphasized that Kaprizov’s next contract could be “the biggest in the NHL ever,” underscoring the forward’s value both on and off the ice. He praised Kaprizov as not only an exceptional hockey player but also a quality individual, suggesting negotiations will proceed swiftly once talks formally resume. With the Wild opening their season on October 9 against the St. Louis Blues, both sides appear eager to secure Kaprizov’s future in Minnesota.
