Nick Gordon had four hits, including his first home run in three weeks, and the Miami Marlins defeated the Athletics 12-3 to put an end to Oakland’s six-game winning streak on Sunday.
Josh Bell contributed with two RBI singles, and Jonah Bride drove in two runs as the Marlins secured their third win in 12 games and prevented a series sweep.
Miami managed to gather 14 hits, with eight players each earning at least one RBI, a significant turnaround from the previous day when the Marlins struggled to score runs in a 20-4 loss to the A’s.
“It’s a huge win,” Gordon expressed. “After the defeat last night, bouncing back like this and dominating them shows the potential of a strong team.”
Brent Rooker, who hit two home runs in one inning during Saturday’s landslide victory, contributed with two hits and scored twice for Oakland.
The game attracted a crowd of 12,212 spectators, marking the largest attendance at the Coliseum since opening day.
Gordon ended a 1-for-21 slump with his two-run homer off starter Joe Boyle. This marked the culmination of a four-run inning that began when Boyle walked the bases loaded in 14 pitches.
Boyle (2-5) left the game due to a lower back injury after the first inning. “He struggled to find the strike zone, and it might be due to his back issue,” noted A’s manager Mark Kotsay. “He’ll undergo an MRI tomorrow, and we’ll decide how to proceed from there.”
Gordon also singled in the third inning, doubled and scored in the sixth, and singled and scored in the ninth inning.
“It was a solid performance throughout the lineup,” commented Marlins manager Skip Schumaker. “Gordon had a particularly impressive day. It’s great to see him finding his form again. We need him to perform well, especially against right-handed pitchers. That’s why he’s part of the team, to excel against right-handed pitching.”
Burch Smith (2-0) pitched a scoreless inning in relief of starter Sixto Sánchez, who pitched for four innings, allowing three hits and two runs. After Gordon’s home run, the Marlins continued to add to their lead.
