Nolan Arenado hit a home run, and Matt Carpenter delivered a tying two-run single in the seventh inning, igniting a massive comeback for the St. Louis Cardinals. They overcame a four-run deficit to beat the Los Angeles Angels 10-5 on Monday night.
Iván Herrera also contributed with two hits during the Cardinals’ impressive rally, finishing it off with a two-run single as St. Louis sent 14 hitters to the plate against the Angels’ top relievers.
“It’s satisfying to see us come together, fight back, and have a big inning,” said Arenado, who kicked off the seventh with his third homer of the season. “Their bullpen is tough, so we were pleased to score those runs and get the win.”
Kyle Leahy secured his first major league win for the Cardinals, who secured consecutive victories after a seven-game losing streak. This series in Anaheim marks only the third time the two teams have met, with the last encounter in May 2016.
“It’s refreshing to win two games in a row,” Arenado added. “Feels like it’s been a while, so hopefully we can keep it up.”
Kevin Pillar contributed with an early two-run homer and a late RBI single for the Angels, who have struggled at home, now standing at 5-15 at the Big A this season.
“It was a tough night,” remarked Angels manager Ron Washington. “We had our best relievers out there in the seventh. I didn’t see that coming. … It caught us off guard because those guys have been reliable.”
Leahy (1-1) pitched 2 2/3 scoreless innings in relief, earning a celebratory beer shower from his teammates after the game. The 26-year-old reliever was drafted in the 17th round from Division II Colorado Mesa.
