The Dallas Mavericks made some strong additions during the offseason. While Klay Thompson joining the Mavs got a lot of attention, players like Quentin Grimes, Naji Marshall, and Spencer Dinwiddie are also expected to contribute.

Grimes’ potential is particularly exciting, and according to NBA insider Marc Stein, he could be up for a contract extension. However, there is one important detail.

“Newly acquired Dallas G Quentin Grimes has emerged as a candidate for a contract extension before Monday’s 6 PM ET deadline for new deals for former first-round picks from the NBA Draft Class of 2021, league sources tell @TheSteinLine,” Stein wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

The important detail is that the deadline is coming up soon. It will be interesting to see if the Mavericks and Grimes can agree on an extension. The Mavs have been impressed with how he has played in the preseason.

“His ability to catch and shoot, his toughness,” Mavs head coach Jason Kidd said after practice on Saturday, talking about what he has noticed from Grimes during the preseason.

“You saw that the other night, didn’t shoot the ball and score well but had 10 rebounds. He’s about the team, he wants to help the team. He does a lot of the little things.”

Even though Grimes won’t be starting when the season begins, he will have an important role coming off the bench. Grimes has the potential to be a three-and-D player, and he also does “the little things” as Kidd mentioned. He can contribute to rebounding and plays hard on the court.

The 24-year-old started his NBA career with the New York Knicks, where he played until the 2023-24 season when he was traded to the Detroit Pistons. The Mavs brought Grimes in this past offseason, and there is a chance for him to grow in his career while playing in Dallas.
