New York Yankees outfielder Oscar González got a fracture in his right eye area after a ball hit his face during Monday night’s game against Diablos Rojos in Mexico City.
The ball hit González’s face after he swung at an inside pitch, causing his helmet to fall off. He had to be taken off the field in a cart.
González was treated at the stadium for an eye injury, and he’ll stay in a hospital in Mexico City for more tests. He’ll be accompanied by Brandon Rodriguez, one of the Yankees’ athletic trainers.
In the game, Jose Trevino had two hits and two RBIs for the Yankees, but they lost 8-5. Luis Serna, a young pitcher from Mexico, struggled on the mound.
Some regular Yankees players, like Anthony Volpe and Giancarlo Stanton, played in the exhibition games in Mexico City. The Yankees also lost the previous game to Diablos Rojos on Sunday.
Yankees manager Aaron Boone praised the experience of playing in Mexico, where baseball has a lot of energy and passionate fans. He said they’re now focused on the upcoming game against the Houston Astros.
During Monday’s game, Diablos Rojos hit a grand slam and scored eight runs in the third inning. They’re one of Mexico’s most successful baseball teams.
Diablos Rojos manager Lorenzo Bundy said they’re happy with the wins against the Yankees, but their main goal is to win the championship this season.
