Australian driver Oscar Piastri claimed his maiden Formula One victory after teammate Lando Norris yielded the lead back to him, securing a McLaren one-two finish at the Hungarian Grand Prix on Sunday.
The race saw a tense exchange between McLaren and Norris, who initially led from pole position but later surrendered the lead to Piastri as per team instructions.
“This is the day I always dreamed about as a kid, standing on the top step of the podium,” said the 23-year-old Piastri. “It got a bit complex towards the end, but starting well put me in a strong position.”
Piastri expressed trust in Norris and felt it was a fair decision for them to swap positions back at the conclusion of the race.
Lewis Hamilton, finishing third, extended his record with a 200th career podium, trailing behind the McLaren duo in their distinctive papaya-colored cars.
Max Verstappen, the points leader, finished fifth behind Charles Leclerc’s Ferrari, marking his third race without a win. Despite this, Verstappen maintains the championship lead with 265 points compared to Norris’ 189, though Red Bull’s earlier performance advantage has waned recently.
