Chiefs Focus on Key Strategy to Halt Bills in AFC Championship Game, Kansas City

The Kansas City Chiefs are very familiar with the challenge of facing an exceptional quarterback. Their defense practices against Patrick Mahomes every day, which could be useful as they prepare for the AFC Championship game this weekend.

Josh Allen is currently the closest quarterback to Mahomes in the NFL. Like Mahomes, Allen can extend plays, avoid sacks, and take over games when needed. Even though the Chiefs were able to limit Allen’s performance in their Week 11 matchup by holding him to a modest 83.5 passer rating, they still saw his talent shine through during key moments of the game.

As the rematch approaches, the Chiefs are looking for ways to make it harder for the Bills’ offense. Head coach Andy Reid spoke to the media on Monday and highlighted third-down performance as an area the defense is focusing on.

“Yeah, so one of the things we’ll keep working on is you’ve got to be able to get off the field on third downs,” Reid said. “We keep stressing that, [defensive coordinator] Steve [Spagnuolo] does, so you’ve got to be able to take care of those third downs, especially when you’ve worked so hard to put yourselves in a good position.

Listen, the Bills do a heck of a job with that. They’re a really good football team, offensively.”

In their previous game in November, the Bills were exceptional on third downs. They converted one fourth down and finished 9-for-15 (60%) on third down attempts. They also succeeded on two of their three third-down tries in the fourth quarter, keeping their drive alive and leading to an Allen rushing touchdown that effectively ended the game.

Josh Allen and Dawson Knox celebrate after scoring in the 2nd half

Advanced stats also show how well the Bills performed in these situations. According to rbsdm.com, the Bills had a remarkable 0.61 EPA/play average on late downs. This included an 80% success rate on their five rushing attempts and a 0.76 EPA/play on 14 passing attempts.

In contrast, Buffalo’s offense was much less efficient on early-down plays, with a 23% success rate and no net gain. The game was decided when the pressure was highest on each of those drives.

Although the Chiefs are focusing on improving their defense in these situations, it’s unclear if they can find a solution. During the regular season, the Bills ranked seventh in third-down conversion rate, while the Chiefs’ defense was ranked 26th at preventing third-down conversions. In the playoffs, Kansas City allowed the Houston Texans to convert 10 out of 17 third downs (59%), while Buffalo managed to convert 5 out of 11 (45%) against the Baltimore Ravens.

Something will have to change this Sunday. This game is shaping up to be a critical battle, and whichever team can win the third-down battle may very well be the one to advance to Super Bowl LIX.

Blackhawks Fall to Hurricanes 4-3 in Overtime at Chicago’s United Center

Sebastian Aho scored just 59 seconds into overtime, giving the Carolina Hurricanes a 4-3 win against the Chicago Blackhawks at the United Center on Monday.

Aho received a pass from Martin Necas in the slot and fired a slap shot into the net. Aho now has four overtime goals this season, tying him for the most in the NHL with Leon Draisaitl from the Edmonton Oilers and Nick Suzuki from the Montreal Canadiens.

“We both can skate, and obviously we have some good history in the OT, so we have a little confidence when we go out there,” Aho said. “Another great pass by [Necas], and I’m lucky to put that in.”

Frederik Andersen, who was playing his first game since October 26 due to a knee injury, made 22 saves for the Hurricanes (28-16-3) in his 500th NHL game.

“It was nice,” Andersen said. “It’s obviously something I was looking forward to for a long time, just to be back and playing. It’s obviously what’s fun and what we like to do. It’s a nice moment (500 games), obviously. You move on pretty quick from these. You’ve got to go again tomorrow. It is kind of nice to acknowledge that and keep building those memories together.”

Petr Mrazek stopped 44 shots for the Blackhawks (15-28-4). Philipp Kurashev and Ryan Donato each had a goal and an assist.

“He was awesome,” said Blackhawks forward Taylor Hall about Mrazek. “He’s been really good for a huge portion of this season. He works hard and he’s always positive. He’s a very good teammate. That would’ve been a nice win to get for him, especially playing his former team.

“We got just a bit overwhelmed by their shot quantity and just how much time they spent in our end. We couldn’t hold onto a lead, with that being said. So yeah, just, we had a goalie that played more than well enough to get a win, and we couldn’t do it.”

Jordan Staal tied the game at 3-3 for the Hurricanes at 13:37 of the third period, tapping the puck into the net after Mrazek tried to cover it. This goal marked Staal’s 700th NHL point (295 goals, 405 assists) in his 1,300th game.

Aho finishes Necas’ dish for overtime winner

“You’ve got to give credit to the captain,” said Carolina coach Rod Brind’Amour about Staal. “We talked about him before the game. It’s the same stuff every night. Without him, I’m not sure where we’d be because he just drags us in it every night.”

Kurashev gave the Blackhawks a 1-0 lead at 9:46 of the first period. Ryan Donato carried the puck up the right-wing boards and made a backhand pass to Kurashev in front of the net. Kurashev had been a healthy scratch for four straight games and eight of the last nine.

“It’s definitely nice for me personally, but now I’ve got to do it again and try to help the team win,” Kurashev said. “It wasn’t always pretty, and we definitely didn’t have always good shifts, but I think we just kept it simple and worked off each other.”

Tyler Bertuzzi made it 2-0 for the Blackhawks at 16:55 when he knocked the puck down in front of the net, got it behind the net, and banked it off Andersen’s back.

Seth Jarvis scored for the Hurricanes on a short-handed goal at 1:25 of the second period, cutting Chicago’s lead to 2-1. Jarvis skated past Chicago defenseman Seth Jones and beat Mrazek with a backhand shot.

“Oh, yeah, we were dead in the water,” Brind’Amour said. “Not a good start. They’re on a power play there. They get one, and it’s probably lights out.”

Jesperi Kotkaniemi tied the game at 2-2 for the Hurricanes at 7:26, tapping in a pass from Eric Robinson behind the net.

Donato put the Blackhawks back in front at 19:41, taking a pass from Hall behind the net and scoring past Andersen’s stick side.

Mike McCarthy will not return as the Cowboys’ coach, with Deion Sanders emerging as a potential replacement in Dallas

Mike McCarthy will not return as head coach of the Dallas Cowboys, according to owner Jerry Jones, who made the announcement on Monday. The Cowboys have not won a Super Bowl in nearly 30 years, and Jones stated that McCarthy and the organization mutually agreed to part ways. The search for the team’s next head coach begins immediately.

Jones expressed his respect for McCarthy, praising him for leading the team through challenging times. McCarthy’s contract ended on January 8 following a 7-10 season. Before that, he led the Cowboys to three consecutive 12-5 seasons but was unable to take the team past the divisional round of the NFC playoffs, a dry spell that has lasted since the Cowboys’ last Super Bowl victory at the end of the 1995 season.

Deion Sanders, the head coach at the University of Colorado and former player for the last Cowboys team to win a Super Bowl, has a strong relationship with Jones. Sanders could be a candidate for the head coach position. The two have discussed the job, according to a source who asked to remain anonymous. While no formal interview has been scheduled, the team is still gathering possible candidates.

The Cowboys had an exclusive window to negotiate with McCarthy through Tuesday, but both parties decided to part ways before that deadline.

McCarthy, 61, previously coached the Green Bay Packers for 13 seasons, where he had a 125-77-2 record. He won a Super Bowl with the Packers in 2011, 14 years ago at AT&T Stadium, the Cowboys’ home. McCarthy also led Green Bay to three NFC championship games.

Jones hired McCarthy in 2020 after Jason Garrett’s tenure ended, as Garrett never reached the NFC championship game in his 10 years as head coach. McCarthy’s record with the Cowboys stands at 50-38, including a 1-3 playoff record.

Deion Sanders weighs NFL offer while staying committed to Boulder (Dallas Cowboys)

The 2022 season saw the Cowboys win the NFC East and achieve 16 consecutive home victories. However, their season ended in disappointment after a 48-32 wild-card loss to the Green Bay Packers, where they trailed by 32 points in the fourth quarter.

The Cowboys also struggled with injuries, losing key players like quarterback Dak Prescott, receiver CeeDee Lamb, guard Zack Martin, cornerback Trevon Diggs, and defender DeMarcus Lawrence during the season.

McCarthy’s firing comes after a period of instability for the Cowboys. Jason Garrett, the franchise’s second-longest-serving coach, led the team for 10 years without reaching the NFC championship game. The longest-tenured coach in Cowboys history was Hall of Famer Tom Landry, who coached for the first 29 seasons. Jones fired Landry after purchasing the team before the 1989 season.

McCarthy has 174 career regular-season wins, ranking among the top 12 NFL coaches for most wins. The only active coaches with more wins than McCarthy are Andy Reid with 302 and Mike Tomlin with 183.

Jones’ next hire will be his ninth head coach. His first coach was Jimmy Johnson, whom he brought in from the University of Miami. Johnson led the Cowboys to back-to-back Super Bowl victories in the 1992-93 seasons, but the two had a bitter split after that.

Barry Switzer took over and won a Super Bowl in his second season but was fired after two years following a 6-10 record. Bill Parcells, another Hall of Famer, coached the Cowboys from 2003-06, leading them to the playoffs twice but losing in the wild-card round both times.

Ohio State’s Ryan Day achieves redemption with the Buckeyes’ first national championship since 2014

Ryan Day earned his sense of vindication when he guided Ohio State to a national championship, just a couple of months after it seemed his job might be at risk.

However, that relief didn’t last long. When asked on Tuesday if his 34-23 victory over Notre Dame in the national championship game would reduce the pressure on him for the 2025 season, Day made it clear he still felt the weight of expectations.

“Try losing the first game and see how that goes at Ohio State,” Day replied.

The Buckeyes’ national title was redemption for Day, who faced significant criticism after Ohio State’s fourth straight loss to Michigan in November. That defeat had led to doubts about his ability to win big games. Day acknowledged the achievement and credited his players for making history. He called them one of the greatest teams in Ohio State history.

Quarterback Will Howard, who wore a “National Champs” cap, and linebacker Cody Simon joined Day for Tuesday’s College Football Playoff champions news conference.

“I’m proud of these guys,” Day said. “And again, we’ll go down in history and cement themselves as champions.”

Though Day didn’t claim he deserved to be listed among the great Ohio State coaches who won national championships, such as Urban Meyer, Jim Tressel, Woody Hayes, and Paul Brown, he did say it was an honor to be the head coach at the university.

“It’s an honor,” Day remarked when asked about joining that group of legendary coaches. “It’s an honor to be the head coach at Ohio State. I’d probably say that this job is not for everybody.”

Day’s victory earned him his place in Ohio State history, despite some unexpected moments, like when the golf cart transporting him to Monday night’s postgame news conference collided with a wall. The driver misjudged the cart’s turning radius, causing Day to jolt forward in his seat, much to the amusement of Howard, who was in the back row.

Ohio State players celebrate after the win

“Obviously, the golf cart incident was pretty funny,” Howard said. “Coach Day, I hope you’re all right. He got jolted a little bit.”

Day jokingly replied, “Send the medical bills to the CFP.”

But Day’s financial reward was much more than a medical bill. His $500,000 bonus for winning the national championship was added to the $500,000 bonuses he had already earned, bringing his total compensation, including his $10 million base salary, to a generous sum.

Day’s success came after a season full of challenges, including the College Football Playoff’s first-ever 12-team format. Ohio State was ranked No. 1 in the final AP Top 25, ahead of Notre Dame.

Day’s record of 68-10 in six seasons at Ohio State is impressive, but his impressive win rate seemed to be overshadowed by his team’s loss to Michigan and their failure to reach the Big Ten championship game.

“None of us ever doubted for a second that he was the right guy to lead this team,” Howard said. “We stuck together and we said we want to do it for each other, we want to do it for our coach, and let’s do this thing, man. I’m really glad that we were able to finish it the right way.”

Simon echoed that sentiment, adding, “No one ever on our team lost any type of faith.”

He explained that after the loss to Michigan, he realized there was “noise all over the world” doubting the team. But Simon said he trusted Day because he saw how hard the coach worked every day.

“You think you’re getting work done and you go and walk past the head coach’s office and he’s already there,” Simon said. “He’s been watching film. His eyes are bloodshot. He puts that extra time in that no one in the world is really putting in.”

When the final seconds ticked off the clock Monday night, Day threw his headset into the air. When asked if he felt happiness or relief, Day admitted he felt both.

“I don’t know if it’s a spectrum. All of the above. Yeah, all of the above,” he said. “There’s a mix of emotions there. It’s hard to really put into words.”

Ohio State gears up for 2025 season amid changes in college football rules and dynamics

Ohio State is the early favorite to win next year’s national championship, but no one really knows what to expect when the season begins in seven months. The game is rapidly changing, and new rules are set to be introduced that will affect how teams prepare and build their rosters.

One of the biggest changes involves a legal settlement that will allow schools to pay players directly while also reducing roster sizes but increasing the number of available scholarships. This will be in place for next season, but schools first need to figure out how it will work, especially in relation to Title IX rules.

There are also questions surrounding the transfer portal, which many believe is out of control, and whether the 12-team playoff system that debuted this season will stay the same or undergo changes.

“There are so many unknowns,” said Gloria Nevarez, commissioner of the Mountain West Conference. “We’re trying to track it all to the best we can and offer solutions. But we’ve got to see what the ‘it’ is so that we can determine how it affects us.”

For Ohio State, their most fortunate turn of events this season was not related to roster planning but to the expansion of the college playoff from four to 12 teams. A crushing loss to Michigan in November had knocked them out of the Big Ten title race, and in previous years, it would have been the end of their season.

But this time, they got another shot, finishing as the sixth-ranked team and receiving an eighth seed thanks to the playoff system.

It’s possible that the College Football Playoff seeding system could change. “I think there will be a good, honest conversation, are there any changes that we ought to make from this year to next year to make something that’s worked really well work even better,” said Pete Bevacqua, Notre Dame’s athletic director.

Another area where changes are expected is how schools will pay players. The recent settlement allows schools to share up to $20.5 million in revenue with players, though it’s unclear how the funds will be divided, particularly between men’s and women’s sports.

Will Howard smile after the win

A government memo raised concerns that paying a larger share to men’s sports could violate Title IX, which ensures gender equality. This issue will likely be addressed by the new administration, with the settlement set to take effect in April.

“It’s been five years of every day being different than the day before it, and adapting and adjusting and being malleable,” said Grant House, an Arizona State swimmer who is a lead plaintiff in the lawsuit causing these changes. “No one has all the answers right now, but we’re looking for solutions.”

As college football faces these many challenges, the idea of appointing a commissioner to oversee the sport has been suggested. This individual would handle issues like scheduling, player pay, the transfer portal, and enforcing new rules. ESPN’s Chris Fowler believes a commissioner could improve the game for fans. “You need some centralized scheduling, you need a more level playing field. You need better enforcement,” he said.

Despite these issues, many of college football’s top programs are expected to remain strong next season. LSU is considered to have had the best transfer portal haul, while Texas will begin the season with quarterback Arch Manning, the grandson of Archie Manning.

At Georgia, Gunner Stockton is expected to replace Carson Beck, who committed to Miami. The Miami Hurricanes also added a defensive back from Wisconsin, Xavier Lucas, who never officially entered the portal, leading to concerns about tampering.

For Ohio State, coach Ryan Day is looking forward to next season after securing a national title, but the pressure will remain high. He faces the challenge of replacing QB Will Howard, who transferred to the NFL. Julian Sayin, a five-star recruit who transferred from Alabama to Ohio State, is expected to step in. The Buckeyes will face Texas in their season opener on August 30.

“Try losing the first game and see how that goes at Ohio State,” Day said. “We’ll see about that.”

Ohio State backup quarterback Devin Brown moves to California for the upcoming season

Ohio State backup quarterback Devin Brown has decided to transfer to the University of California.

Brown entered the transfer portal in December, but he remained with Ohio State during their journey to the national championship, which they capped off with a victory over Notre Dame on Monday night.

California made the announcement on Tuesday that Brown will be joining the Golden Bears for the upcoming season.

The Bears lost their starting quarterback, Fernando Mendoza, to Indiana this offseason. They also saw the departure of their top two backup quarterbacks, Chandler Rogers and CJ Harris, who both entered the transfer portal.

Brown is expected to compete for the starting quarterback position at Cal, likely against freshman Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele. He still has two years of eligibility left.

Ohio State players celebrate in the 2nd half

Brown lost a tight quarterback battle to Kyle McCord in 2023 and found himself as a backup once more when Ohio State added Kansas State transfer Will Howard for the 2024 season.

A native of Gilbert, Arizona, Brown has passed for 331 yards and three touchdowns over the past two seasons, mainly seeing action in games when the outcome was already decided.

A young collector in Pittsburgh scores a rare Paul Skenes card that could bring a significant trade value with the Pirates

An 11-year-old collector in Los Angeles has recently acquired a unique baseball card featuring Paul Skenes, the National League Rookie of the Year. Topps announced on Tuesday that the card, which includes Skenes’ autograph and a patch from a game-worn jersey, had been found.

Now, the excitement shifts to determining the value of the card on the open market. The collector may receive a large return if they choose to trade it to the Pittsburgh Pirates. The team has proposed a package that includes 30 years’ worth of season tickets behind home plate at PNC Park in exchange for the card.

Livvy Dunne, Skenes’ girlfriend and LSU gymnast, is offering the card’s owner the chance to enjoy a game in a luxury suite at the stadium during one of Skenes’ starts.

Paul Skenes pitches in the 1st inning

The card could also hold significant value elsewhere, considering Skenes’ promising future. The 22-year-old pitcher finished third in the NL Cy Young Award voting after an outstanding rookie season in 2024.

Skenes, the first overall pick in the 2023 amateur draft, made his major league debut in May and delivered one of the most impressive rookie campaigns in recent years. He was selected to start in the All-Star Game after just 11 starts and ended the season with an 11-3 record and a 1.96 ERA in 23 games.

Over the weekend, Skenes mentioned that he has not considered signing a long-term contract to stay with the Pirates. Instead, his focus remains on helping the team contend in 2025.

The Chicago White Sox and Martín Pérez have agreed to a $5 million, one-year deal

The Chicago White Sox and experienced left-handed pitcher Martín Pérez have finalized a $5 million, one-year contract, which also includes a mutual option for the 2026 season. The agreement was made about two weeks ago, and the team made the announcement on Tuesday. To make room for Pérez on the 40-man roster, the White Sox designated right-handed pitcher Ron Marinaccio for assignment.

Pérez, 33 years old, began his MLB career with the Texas Rangers in 2012. He earned an All-Star selection in 2022 and played a key role in helping the Rangers win the World Series in 2023.

Last season, Pérez played for both Pittsburgh and San Diego, finishing with a 5-6 record and a 4.53 ERA over 26 starts. Throughout his career, he has appeared in 314 major league games, starting 269 of them, with a 90-87 record and a 4.44 ERA.

In 2023, Pérez was placed on the injured list for a left groin strain from May 28 to June 28.

Chicago White Sox’s Andrew Vaughn and Justin Jirschele celebrate after a home run

His final start with Pittsburgh was a strong one, pitching six scoreless innings before being traded to San Diego on July 30. Pérez finished the season on a positive note with the Padres, going 3-1 and posting a 3.46 ERA over his last 10 starts.

However, he did not pitch in the postseason for San Diego, as the Padres were eliminated by the Dodgers in the NL Division Series.

Meanwhile, Marinaccio made 16 relief appearances for the New York Yankees last season, going 1-0 with a 3.86 ERA. He was claimed off waivers by the White Sox on September 23.

The White Sox are looking to bounce back from a tough 2024 season, where they finished with a dismal 41-121 record, which set a post-1900 MLB record for the most losses in a season.

In Toronto, Santander says the Blue Jays jersey “already looks great on me”

General manager Ross Atkins mentioned that a Toronto Blue Jays jersey with Anthony Santander’s name on it had been “floating around our office” all through the offseason.

Santander finally put it on Tuesday during a Zoom press conference, a day after he completed a $92.5 million, five-year deal with the team.

“Looks great on me already,” Santander said with a smile.

The contract includes an opt-out clause and a team option for 2030, with escalators that could raise the total value to $110 million.

“The process was really good,” Santander shared. “Since day one, we’ve had really good communication, back and forth. I know it took a little bit longer, but we got what we wanted. We’re here. The process was really easy.”

The 30-year-old outfielder was named an All-Star for the first time last year in his eighth and final season with the Baltimore Orioles. He posted a .235 batting average, setting personal records with 44 home runs, 102 RBIs, and 91 runs in 155 games.

Now joining the Blue Jays, Santander will be part of a lineup that is expected to feature George Springer, Bo Bichette, and Vladimir Guerrero Jr.

“I’m happy for this opportunity,” Santander said. “I can’t wait to be with my brothers. It starts on day one of spring training. Work hard, get better every single day and go after the championship.”

Toronto Blue Jays players celebrates after scoring

He added, “That’s what we’re looking for. That’s what I’m here for.”

The Blue Jays made the playoffs as wild card teams in 2020, 2022, and 2023. However, they finished last in the AL East last year with a 74-88 record.

“Anthony is about as good of a fit as we can find,” Atkins said. “He can hit from both sides of the plate, consistently putting the ball over the fence. His ability to make an impact every night is exactly what we were looking for, and he’ll be a great addition to this lineup.”

A switch-hitter who can hit for power from both sides, Santander has averaged 35 home runs, 95 RBIs, and 153 games over the past three seasons.

He is the first big free agent signing for the Blue Jays this winter.

Atkins did not comment on the team’s failed pursuit of pitcher Roki Sasaki, who signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers, nor did he address the potential of a long-term deal with Guerrero, who could become a free agent after the 2025 World Series.

Santander is expected to play as a designated hitter for manager John Schneider and will likely bat cleanup in many games.

“Left field, right field, first base, DH — I’m really flexible with that,” Santander said. “All that I want is to get ready to win games.”

In Le Chesnay, Victor Wembanyama of the Spurs opens two new outdoor courts for local kids to enjoy

Victor Wembanyama stood on the center line of a new outdoor court in his hometown, stretching his arms to their full 8-foot wingspan as photographers snapped pictures. He looked thrilled.

Wembanyama presented a special gift to his hometown and future basketball stars on Tuesday: two outdoor courts — one for 5-on-5 play and the other for 3-on-3. He designed them himself, sketching out the plans and ensuring they matched his vision.

“For those of you that don’t know, this started in a room with an idea,” said San Antonio general manager Brian Wright, addressing a group of about 60 children and around 100 others watching from nearby seats.

“I remember watching Victor going on a whiteboard and literally drawing every single detail of the court that you see today and putting his heart and soul into designing this court for the children to play on. It speaks to how special you are and how special this is to you, so thank you, Victor.”

Wembanyama and the Spurs are currently in France, preparing for games against the Indiana Pacers on Thursday and Saturday in Paris. While many believe he’s from Paris, Wembanyama is actually from Le Chesnay, a small town about 12 miles west of the city.

It was important for him to have the courts finished before the Spurs’ visit, though some doubted it could be done in time.

“Impossible,” said Le Chesnay’s mayor, Richard Delepierre.

There were many obstacles: old courts that needed to be removed, approval for designs, weather issues, and the difficulty of building near the Palace of Versailles. But Wembanyama’s determination made it happen.

“Beyond his immense basketball talents, it seems that Victor possesses great qualities of art and a certain capacity for persuasion,” Delepierre said.

Construction began just a couple of months ago, but by Tuesday, the courts were finished. The nets were tight, waiting for their first shot, and the children pulled back a black drape to reveal the center court design, which combined elements from both the Spurs’ logo and the Le Chesnay clock tower. Wembanyama caught a lob and dunked to mark the opening.

Victor Wembanyama meets his young fans

“It was my dream also to have these kind of courts when I was living here,” Wembanyama said.

Le Chesnay is a small city with about 30,000 residents, located just west of downtown Paris. From the town hall, there’s a view of the Palace of Versailles, which once served as the home of King Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette. Local legend has it that Napoleon sometimes visited the area and even ordered that trees be planted in a particular way along the streets.

This is where Wembanyama’s love for basketball grew. Most of Le Chesnay’s residents, known as Chesnaycourtois and Chesnaycourtoises, engage in some type of sport. Wembanyama stirred up excitement in the town last year when he brought friends to play a pickup soccer game, using the same field they once did as kids. The town also has a passion for handball, auto racing, and equestrian sports, and in 2009, a filly named Le Chesnay raced at the Saratoga Race Course.

Now, though, it’s a basketball town. Kids can be found playing the game all over Le Chesnay, many wearing Spurs jerseys or T-shirts. Wembanyama’s mother, Elodie de Fautereau, a former standout player and coach, helped shape his basketball journey.

“The Spurs ‘Play Paris’ initiative isn’t just about building a court, it’s about creating a vibrant hub for the community that honors Victor’s journey and his commitment to giving back,” said RC Buford, CEO of Spurs Sports and Entertainment. “This renovated space will hopefully inspire the next generation and showcase the power of sports to bring people together.”

Although the Spurs haven’t disclosed the exact cost of the project, Delepierre mentioned that it was a significant part of the total estimated budget of $500,000. It’s worth mentioning that the courts aren’t designed to be a tribute to Wembanyama, though they feature the Le Chesnay city logo and the Spurs logo. There’s nothing overtly focused on his name.

Wembanyama didn’t want the courts to be all about him. And they were completed just in time.

“Impossible,” Delepierre said, reversing his earlier statement. “Is not French.”

In Los Angeles, LeBron James recorded a triple-double just one night after attending his Buckeyes’ CFP title win, calling the experience “super-cool”

LeBron James’ first triple-double after turning 40 was impressive on its own. What made it even more remarkable was that he achieved it just one day after flying from Los Angeles to Atlanta and back to support his Ohio State Buckeyes in the College Football Playoff championship game.

James showed no signs of fatigue or jet lag while recording 21 points, 13 assists, and 10 rebounds in the Los Angeles Lakers’ 111-88 win over the Washington Wizards on Tuesday night. On Monday, he was 2,200 miles away in a luxury box at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, celebrating with friends and family as the Buckeyes secured their title with a victory over Notre Dame.

“It was great to be there,” James said. “I was also there 10 years ago, I believe, when they won it. I was there in Dallas when they won it. To be there yesterday with a lot of my family and friends, it was super cool to be able to have that moment. We’re all diehard Ohio State fans back home.”

James, who grew up in Akron, has been a passionate Ohio State football fan since childhood. He watches their games on TV and attends in person whenever he can, including in January 2015 when Ohio State, led by Urban Meyer, defeated Oregon to win the first-ever College Football Playoff.

James, while a four-time NBA champion, is also a genuine sports fan who still finds excitement in witnessing historic moments. “Anytime you see championship-caliber teams go out and play to a level of excellence, it’s always inspiring,” James said. “No matter if it’s college or if it’s pros, whatever the case may be, it’s always inspiring. So I’m always inspired by greatness.”

The trip would be challenging for most people, but James had the luxury of private jet travel. He had scored 25 points for the Lakers against the Los Angeles Clippers on Sunday night before his long day of travel on Monday. He returned on Tuesday night to record his 121st career triple-double, the fifth-most in NBA history.

James’ trip to Dallas 10 years ago was similarly impressive. At that time, he was with the Cleveland Cavaliers, and he had games in Sacramento and Phoenix on the days before and after the Buckeyes’ title game against Oregon. James flew to Dallas, got back to Arizona around 12:30 a.m., and scored 33 points against the Suns the next evening.

This was James’ ninth triple-double of the season and his first since his 40th birthday on December 30. Halfway through his 22nd NBA season, he has shown almost no signs of slowing down, averaging 23.8 points, 8.9 assists, and 7.4 rebounds.

Karl Malone is the only other player in NBA history to record a triple-double in his 40s. The Mailman did it for the Lakers on November 28, 2003, when he was 105 days older than LeBron was on Tuesday night.

Over the past two seasons, James has recorded 14 triple-doubles, extending his own record as the second-oldest player in NBA history to achieve the feat each time.
