Patrick Corbin earned his first win of the season by allowing just one run over five innings. Trey Lipscomb’s two-run single also contributed to the Washington Nationals’ 5-1 victory over the Boston Red Sox on Friday night.
Corbin’s performance saw him giving up seven hits and a walk while striking out four. Despite facing challenges in four of the five innings, he managed to maintain control, aided by a crucial play from right fielder Victor Robles, who threw out a runner at home for the final out in the first inning.
“We found a good rhythm as the game progressed,” Corbin remarked. “We effectively used all our pitches, both inside and outside. It’s satisfying to complete five innings and add some late runs to secure the win.”
Robles and Eddie Rosario contributed two hits each, supporting the Nationals’ rise above .500 for the second time this season, now standing at 19-18. Robles, making his first start since returning from the injured list, made a significant impact with a crucial catch in the sixth inning.
Meanwhile, Garrett Cooper’s double accounted for Boston’s sole run. Red Sox starter Tanner Houck faced challenges with two outs on two occasions but managed to pitch seven innings, allowing three runs.
However, Boston struggled to capitalize with runners in scoring position, stranding 11 and only managing one hit in nine attempts. This defeat marks the Red Sox’s sixth loss in seven games, bringing their record to 19-19.
