Cody Bellinger hit a single that gave the Chicago Cubs the lead, and Patrick Wisdom secured the win with a home run in the 10th inning against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Sunday, securing a series victory.
Bellinger started the 10th inning with a ground ball that found a gap in the left side of the Pirates’ defense, bringing home Seiya Suzuki, who was placed on base automatically. Wisdom then smashed a home run into the center-field bushes, extending the Cubs’ lead.
Wisdom praised the team’s resilience and consistency, highlighting their ability to keep putting pressure on the opposition with quality at-bats and hard-hit balls. Despite some hard-hit balls being caught, Wisdom expressed confidence in the team’s ability to keep scoring.
Pirates pitcher Aroldis Chapman exited the game due to a cracked nail on his throwing hand after falling behind 3-0 to Nick Madrigal with two outs and runners on base. Kyle Nicolas replaced him and allowed a run on a passed ball, allowing the Cubs to extend their lead.
In the bottom of the 10th inning, Pirates’ Connor Joe hit a two-run home run, but Cubs’ pitcher Adbert Alzolay managed to close out the game and secure the win.
The Cubs have now won five of their last eight games, including the series against the Pirates, who have struggled recently with a 7-16 record since their strong start to the season. Cubs manager Craig Counsell praised his team’s pitching performance and resilience in securing the win.
