Paula Badosa’s unfortunate streak of injuries continues as she was forced to retire from her second-round match at the 2024 Thailand Open due to a lower back injury, marking the second time in less than a year she has faced such a setback. Last year, she withdrew from the 2023 Wimbledon Championships due to a spinal stress fracture.

After an impressive run to the third round of the Australian Open, Badosa’s campaign in Thailand was cut short. Trailing Diana Shnaider 2-6, 4-3, in the second round, Badosa made the difficult decision to call it quits. Her journey in Thailand began with a hard-fought victory over Lanlana Tararudee in the first round.

The official Instagram account of the Thailand Open confirmed Badosa’s withdrawal from the tournament, stating, “Unfortunately, Paula Badosa had to retire due to a lower back injury. Get well soon.” This marks the fourth time in the past year that Badosa has been sidelined due to injury.

Previously, she was unable to compete in the semifinal match against Daria Kasatkina at the 2023 Adelaide International 2 due to a thigh injury, which also led to her absence from the Australian Open.

Following that, Badosa encountered a spinal stress fracture during the Rome tournament in May 2023, resulting in her withdrawal from the French Open, where she had reached the quarterfinals in 2021.

Her attempt to return at Wimbledon was also marred by injury, as she retired in the second round against Marta Kostyuk.

Taking a six-month break to focus on recovery, Badosa resumed competition in January at the Adelaide International, where she experienced an early exit. Despite the setbacks, she showcased resilience at the Australian Open, advancing to the third round for the second time in her career.
