Philadelphia Phillies ace Zack Wheeler aims to start his next game despite dealing with lower back tightness. He remains undecided about joining his teammates at the All-Star Game on July 16 in Texas.
Wheeler downplayed concerns about his back after exiting the Phillies’ 10-1 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers following five innings. The tightness became noticeable during an extended stint in the dugout after a big fourth inning for the Phillies, which included Trea Turner’s grand slam.
Despite the discomfort, Wheeler pushed through and pitched another inning to secure his 10th win. He admitted his back has been bothering him since a game against Arizona on June 22 and worsened during his recent outing in Miami.
“I landed awkwardly on the mound before the road trip,” Wheeler explained. “It tightened up, and I’ve been managing it since then with treatment.”
On a humid night in Philadelphia, Wheeler threw 76 pitches, striking out seven and allowing three hits, including a solo home run to Cavan Biggio.
With a record of 10-4 and an ERA of 2.70, Wheeler was set to start this weekend but won’t participate in the All-Star Game. The Phillies, who lead the majors with seven All-Star selections, include Wheeler among the pitchers chosen alongside Bryce Harper, Trea Turner, and Alec Bohm among the starting players.
As for attending the All-Star Game at Globe Life Field, Wheeler said he has yet to make a decision.
