An investigation has been initiated by law enforcement following a lawsuit filed by Dak Prescott, the quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys, against a woman and her legal representatives, citing alleged extortion.
As reported by James Hartley of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, the Prosper Police Department confirmed that they are looking into the matter after Prescott’s legal counsel reported a case of theft by coercion.
The lawsuit, lodged in Collin County, Texas, by Prescott on Monday, accuses the woman and her lawyers of attempting to extort $100 million from him in connection to a 2017 sexual assault allegation. Dallas police have confirmed to Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News that Prescott himself is under investigation regarding the alleged assault.
The purported incident is said to have taken place in the parking lot of the XTC Cabaret strip club in Dallas on February 2, 2017, according to the Dallas Morning News.
Correspondence from the woman’s legal representatives to Prescott outlined the demand for $100 million in damages, suggesting that she would refrain from pursuing criminal charges or disclosing the matter publicly if compensated for her purported mental anguish.
Levi McCathern, representing Prescott, dismissed the accusations as an “extortion plot,” with the quarterback vehemently denying any wrongdoing. In a message to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Prescott stated, “She is trying to get $100 million from me to ‘not report’ a rape case I obviously did not do.”
Prescott asserted that he had not been informed about the alleged assault prior to receiving the letter, which prompted him to involve law enforcement, as per his legal team.
Although Prescott and the woman were not in a romantic relationship, they were acquainted both before and after the alleged assault, as clarified by McCathern. Their interaction on the day of the alleged incident occurred within a group setting, according to Prescott’s attorneys.
The woman’s legal counsel declared on Tuesday her intention to pursue criminal charges against Prescott, according to Hartley’s report. Prescott, who has played his entire eight-year professional career with the Cowboys, is eligible for a contract extension during this offseason, with his free agency set for 2025.
