Real Madrid is reportedly considering allowing Kepa Arrizabalaga to return to Chelsea after the season. The goalkeeper was loaned from Chelsea last summer following Thibaut Courtois’ injury.
During his tenure, Kepa has shown a mixed performance, registering seven clean sheets in 18 matches across various competitions. While initially the primary choice for Real Madrid, he has now taken a backseat to Andriy Lunin.
Lunin, the 24-year-old Ukrainian goalkeeper, has gained prominence, starting eight of the team’s last 10 LaLiga games and earning Carlo Ancelotti’s favor in Courtois’ absence. However, the situation is expected to reverse next season, allowing Kepa to depart, as indicated by Relevo (h/t @MadridXtra on X).
Notably, Kepa’s loan agreement with Real Madrid does not include any clauses—optional or obligatory—for a permanent transfer. Consequently, he faces uncertainty regarding his future career path.
According to a report from the Evening Standard last month, Chelsea are eager to offload the 29-year-old permanently, content with Robert Sanchez and Djordje Petrovic as alternatives. Kepa is set to enter the final year of his £180,000-a-week contract at Stamford Bridge next season.
Kepa’s journey began in 2018 when he joined Chelsea from Athletic Bilbao for £71 million, making him the world’s most expensive goalkeeper. His signing aimed to fill the void left by Courtois, who departed for Real Madrid in the same transfer window.
Despite moments of uncertainty, Kepa has made 163 appearances for Chelsea, keeping 59 clean sheets during his tenure in west London.
