Real Madrid goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga is reportedly dissatisfied with his current role at the Santiago Bernabeu since joining on loan. The Spanish shot-stopper moved from Chelsea to Real Madrid on loan at the beginning of the season following an injury to Thibaut Courtois.
Having reclaimed his starting position at Stamford Bridge under manager Graham Potter after a period out of favor, Kepa was poised to be Chelsea’s primary goalkeeper for the 2023-24 season.
However, circumstances changed, leading him to accept offers from both Bayern Munich and Real Madrid due to injuries to their goalkeepers, Manuel Neuer and Courtois, respectively.
Upon his return to Spain, Kepa quickly began featuring in matches for the Spanish giants. However, his place in the team gradually came under threat as 25-year-old Ukrainian goalkeeper Andriy Lunin, who previously served as Courtois’ understudy, began delivering impressive performances, ultimately displacing Kepa as the regular starter.
The uncertainty surrounding the goalkeeping situation at Real Madrid, with manager Carlo Ancelotti declining to designate a clear first choice, has left Kepa frustrated. He reportedly desires more communication from the manager regarding his role in the team, as reported by The Athletic.
Despite Kepa’s initial hopes of securing a permanent deal with Real Madrid following his loan spell, recent developments suggest otherwise. So far this season, Kepa has made 18 appearances, keeping seven clean sheets and conceding 18 goals, while Lunin has featured 19 times, conceding 14 goals and keeping nine clean sheets.
Kepa’s last appearance for Real Madrid was in a league match against Almeria on January 21st.
