As the MLB trade deadline nears, the Boston Red Sox have set their sights on Los Angeles Angels infielder Luis Rengifo, according to Chris Cotillo and Sean McAdam of MassLive.com.
While the Red Sox are mainly focused on bolstering their pitching staff, including both the starting rotation and the bullpen, their exact approach remains unclear. Currently, they are just one game away from claiming the final American League wild-card spot, which adds to the urgency of their decision-making.
Luis Rengifo, who has been sidelined since July 3 due to a wrist injury, was having a standout season before his absence. In his first 69 games, the 27-year-old compiled 79 hits, a .315 batting average, six home runs, and 25 RBIs. Additionally, his 22 stolen bases still rank fourth among American League players despite his recent injury.
Interest in Rengifo is high, with multiple teams, including the Red Sox, expressing a desire to acquire him. Jon Heyman of the New York Post reported that the Angels have been inundated with inquiries about the utility man.
Despite this interest, the Angels seem reluctant to part with Rengifo, as they prefer to keep him, especially given his contract status through the 2025 season.
The Red Sox’s pitching has been anchored by strong performances from Tanner Houck and Kutter Crawford. Nonetheless, the addition of another reliable starting pitcher could significantly enhance their chances for a successful postseason run. Additionally, while Kenley Jansen has been effective as a closer, the Red Sox might seek another reliever to help bridge the gap for him.
As the trade deadline on July 30 approaches, the Red Sox are expected to be active in the market. The team’s performance and standing in the playoff race will likely influence their decisions as they look to make strategic moves to bolster their roster for a potential postseason push.
