The Cincinnati Reds placed struggling first baseman Christian Encarnacion-Strand on the 10-day injured list on Wednesday due to a fractured wrist bone.
The 24-year-old is expected to be sidelined for four to six weeks. In his place, Cincinnati signed veteran first baseman Mike Ford to a major-league contract for the 2024 season.
Jeimer Candelario, primarily a third baseman, started at first base on Wednesday night against the Diamondbacks.
Encarnacion-Strand missed four games after being hit on the wrist on April 27.
He returned to play four games before being placed on the injured list. He had a batting average of .190 this season with two home runs and 35 strikeouts.
Ford, aged 31, played for the Seattle Mariners last year and was signed to a minor league contract by the Reds earlier this season. He performed well, hitting .297 with six homers and 15 RBIs in 24 games at Triple-A Louisville.
