The Detroit Lions defeated the Los Angeles Rams with just one point. Although for the Lions, it’s a historic win after 32 years in a playoff round, the loss for the Rams is a “regrettable” one. In a post-game press conference, Rams coach Sean McVay revisited what went wrong for the team.
The Ford Field saw a historic game unfold on Sunday, where the No. 3-seeded Lions defeated the No. 6 Rams with a score of 24-23. Although the first half saw a good defensive game put up by both teams, the second half turned out bitter for the players in the Rams’ uniforms. A mistake took away the punt from them, and they never received the ball. Coach McVay is disappointed.
Sean McVay acknowledged the wrong decision!
In a post-game press conference, Sean McVay said that they had good opportunities to exploit the Lions’ defensive strategies, especially in open-field situations. However, the Lions’ tightened up their defense in the red zone.
McVay acknowledged some execution issues with his team, particularly mentioning a critical play on third down where they got the coverage they wanted, but the Lions managed to break it up. Reflecting on that decision made with just four minutes left into the game and a timeout, McVay expressed, “We’re all for getting a stop and hindsight’s 20-20 and certainly regret that decision.”
With just four minutes and 20 seconds remaining in the game and the Lions clinging to a 24-23 lead, the Rams faced a crucial 3rd & 14th at the Detroit 44-yard line. In a pivotal moment, the Lions’ defense, led by CB Cam Sutton, made a key play by knocking a pass away from Rams star wide receiver Puka Nacua. This defensive effort forced the Rams to punt, and then they never regained their possession of the ball.
McVay wished to play better, but now he will focus on the next 2024 season. Meanwhile, he is proud and happy for his rival team, the Lions.
Sean McVay is happy for Dan Campbell and his team!
In the same post-game press conference, Rams coach Sean McVay congratulated the Lions coach Dan Campbell and his team for a glorious victory. He said that the Rams thought they had the chance to win, but he’s “so proud of this football team.” McVay further added that he learned a lot from the Lions and the coaches around.
He also highlighted the strong performance of the defense in the second half of his team but pointed out the difference in red zone efficiency, with the Rams going 0-3 and the Lions three for three. Nevertheless, he acknowledged that he was grateful to his team for their efforts. McVay further emphasized learning from the game and expressed, “….More than anything, just the appreciation and the gratitude is what sticks out to me about this team [Lions]. Hats off to the Lions for finding a way to get it done. I got nothing but respect for that group.”
