According to Relevo, Real Madrid no longer perceives Barcelona as a contender in the transfer market, deeming the Blaugrana to be dealing with sufficient challenges of their own. The report suggests that Real Madrid’s perspective on a competitive level has also evolved.
In recent seasons, Barcelona has faced financial difficulties, hindering their ability to secure major signings in the transfer market. While players like Joao Felix and Joao Cancelo joined the club in the summer, both arrived on loan.
Barcelona has also made several low-cost acquisitions, such as Ilkay Gundogan from Manchester City (for free), Oriol Romeu from Girona (€3.4 million), and Inigo Martinez from Athletic Bilbao (for free).
However, Barcelona has struggled to sign top-tier players in recent times. Robert Lewandowski’s arrival in 2022 was arguably their last significant signing. Additionally, they have missed out on key transfer targets like Arda Guler and Endrick, both of whom joined their arch-rivals Real Madrid.
Real Madrid also believes that Barcelona’s approach to nurturing young talents into top performers is a long-term project, not an immediate threat. Therefore, they do not view La Blaugrana as direct competition.
Despite winning La Liga and the Supercopa de Espana last season, Barcelona has faced challenges this term. They currently sit third in La Liga and have been eliminated from the Copa del Rey. Additionally, they suffered a 4-1 defeat to Real Madrid in the Supercopa final in Riyadh.
Meanwhile, Real Madrid remains a formidable force in European football. They are second in La Liga with 51 points from 20 games, trailing leaders Girona by a point with a game in hand.
Under Carlo Ancelotti’s leadership, Real Madrid is also considered one of the favorites to win the UEFA Champions League. While Barcelona remains in contention in the competition, their prospects are not as promising.
As a result, both on the field and in the transfer market, Real Madrid holds a significant advantage over their rivals at present.
