According to HITC, England manager Gareth Southgate is contemplating summoning Manchester United prodigy Kobbie Mainoo to prevent him from switching national allegiances. Mainoo has recently emerged as one of the brightest young talents in English football, impressing with standout performances for the Red Devils.
The 18-year-old showcased his potential with a crucial late goal in United’s thrilling 4-3 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers on February 1 at the Molineux, displaying a level of maturity beyond his years.
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) is actively pursuing Mainoo to represent them internationally. Randy Abbey, a member of the GFA’s executive council, expressed their interest in recruiting top talents like Mainoo for their national teams, stating to the Daily Telegraph:
“The Ghana Football Association is keen on identifying, attracting, and convincing all eligible talents to join its various national teams. Kobbie is undoubtedly one of those remarkable talents, and the Association is eager to collaborate with him and many others, both at home and abroad.”
However, Mainoo has also attracted the attention of Gareth Southgate, as reported. With upcoming fixtures against Brazil and Belgium in March, the Three Lions coach is reportedly contemplating including the Manchester United prodigy in the squad for these matches.
While Southgate already has midfield options like Declan Rice and Jude Bellingham, players like Kalvin Phillips and Jordan Henderson are currently not performing up to expectations. As the UEFA Euro approaches this June, Mainoo’s rapid ascent could see him vying for a spot in the English squad for the tournament.
