According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, linebacker Leonard Floyd is set to join the San Francisco 49ers.
Floyd’s move to the 49ers comes with a two-year contract valued at $20 million, with potential earnings reaching up to $24 million. In his first year with San Francisco, the veteran linebacker will receive $12 million guaranteed.
Last season, Floyd, aged 31, demonstrated his prowess on the field with the Buffalo Bills, recording 32 tackles, 10.5 sacks, and forcing a fumble during his tenure with the team.
Having begun his career with the Chicago Bears, Floyd made his mark before transitioning to the Los Angeles Rams in 2020. Following three seasons with the Rams, Floyd opted for a one-year deal with the Bills.
Now, Floyd reunites with his former position coach from the Bears, Brandon Staley, who currently serves as the 49ers’ assistant head coach. Staley assumed the role after parting ways with the Los Angeles Chargers in December.
Floyd’s addition further strengthens an already formidable 49ers defense. In 2023, the team allowed an average of 303.9 yards per game, ranking eighth in the league. Despite their strong defensive performance, the 49ers fell short in the Super Bowl against the Kansas City Chiefs, highlighting areas for improvement.
With Floyd on board, San Francisco aims to fortify their defense, seeking a return to the Super Bowl with an enhanced defensive unit leading the charge.
