Rhys Hoskins hit a three-run homer in the seventh inning, giving the Milwaukee Brewers the lead as they defeated the St. Louis Cardinals 5-3 on Saturday night. This loss marks the Cardinals’ seventh consecutive defeat.
When the Brewers were trailing 3-2, Hoskins smashed his ninth homer of the season, a 407-foot shot to center field off reliever Andrew Kittredge (0-2).
The Brewers, leading the NL Central, have now won eight consecutive games against the Cardinals, which is their longest winning streak against St. Louis in team history.
Currently sitting at the bottom of the division and trailing the Brewers by nine games, the Cardinals hold the longest ongoing losing streak in the MLB.
Hoskins, who missed the entire previous season due to a torn ACL, expressed his joy at being back in such exciting moments.
Milwaukee’s starting pitcher, Freddy Peralta, had a much-improved performance compared to his last outing, walking only one batter and striking out eight over six innings, despite giving up three runs.
Relievers Hoby Milner (1-0), Bryan Hudson, and Trevor Megill effectively held off the Cardinals’ offense, allowing only four hits in three scoreless innings. Megill secured his fourth save of the season.
In the ninth inning, Paul Goldschmidt ended his career-worst 0-for-32 slump by hitting a single off Megill with a runner on first base, attempting to spark a late rally for the Cardinals.
