Anthony Richardson is expected to create many exciting moments and some rookie mistakes in his first full season as a starter.
On Sunday, Richardson had more of the latter as the Indianapolis Colts fell 16-10 to the Green Bay Packers, remaining winless. He threw three interceptions, with the final one coming on a Hail Mary attempt that was caught by Evan Williams as time ran out.
“You can’t win any game with multiple turnovers,” Richardson admitted. “That’s on me.”
Richardson completed 17 of 34 passes for 204 yards and one touchdown, along with the three interceptions. He also ran for 37 yards on four carries.
Despite the Colts’ loss, the fact that they had a chance to win in the final moments highlighted Richardson’s playmaking skills.
Richardson showed off his impressive athleticism by running 11 yards down the sideline on a crucial fourth-and-10 play to keep the game alive. On the next play, he threw a 4-yard touchdown pass to Alec Pierce with 1:47 left.
Indianapolis had one last chance with the ball on its own 41-yard line for the final play. The Packers were cautious, knowing Richardson had thrown a 60-yard touchdown pass to Pierce the previous week, which traveled 63 yards in the air.
“The guy has a freaking cannon,” said Green Bay linebacker Eric Wilson, who had one of the Packers’ interceptions. “He put that on show the first game of the year.”
These impressive plays show why the Colts are optimistic about their future with Richardson, as long as he stays healthy. After drafting him with the No. 4 overall pick in the 2023 draft, Richardson had only played four games as a rookie before needing season-ending shoulder surgery.
However, the Colts will also need to deal with the mistakes that come with his limited experience. Richardson began this season with just 13 college starts and four professional starts.
