The Vikings acquired another first-round pick in the 2024 draft with the clear intention of moving up from their current position at No. 11. Former Vikings General Manager Rick Spielman believes they will indeed move up and be willing to pay a high price to do so.
Spielman shared his thoughts on a CBS Sports podcast, suggesting that the Vikings may need to give up picks 11 and 23, along with their 2025 first-round pick, and possibly more, to secure former Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy.
He emphasized that the Vikings are in a position where they may have to make such a move, especially since they didn’t extend Kirk Cousins’ contract. This signaled their intent to use their high draft pick to address their quarterback situation.
While they could opt for Sam Darnold for a year, their priority seems to be finding a potential franchise quarterback in this draft. The key question remains how high they are willing to trade up and which quarterback they target.
The Vikings will likely keep their plans close to the chest until the draft day to maintain leverage and ensure they get their desired player. Additionally, whoever they select will benefit from the coaching expertise of Kevin O’Connell, known for his skill in developing quarterbacks.
This advantage may not be available to other quarterbacks in the draft class, depending on where they land and who coaches them.
