Riley Greene hit two home runs for the first time in his career, and Mark Canha also hit a home run as the Detroit Tigers defeated the Tampa Bay Rays 4-2 on Tuesday night.
The Tigers have won the first two games of the three-game series, securing their fifth unbeaten road series (4-0-1) to start the season. The last time Detroit began a season with five unbeaten road series was in 2007.
“It’s a special team,” Riley said. “We have a lot of hard working guys here, and it’s paying off. We have good team chemistry, our pitchers are performing well, and our bullpen has been a big help.”
In the eighth inning with the Tigers trailing 2-1, Greene hit a two-run homer off Colin Poche (0-1), followed by Canha’s solo home run to extend the lead to 4-2.
Greene initially put the Tigers ahead 1-0 in the third inning with a 426-foot homer to center off Ryan Pepiot. He also drew his 21st walk of the season in the first inning, tying him with Mookie Betts of the Los Angeles Dodgers for the MLB lead in walks.
Greene, who went to high school around 100 miles away from Tropicana Field in Oviedo, Florida, had several family members, including his parents and grandparents, in attendance for the game.
