Rio Ferdinand reflects on his conversation with Pepe following Porto’s 1-0 Champions League victory over Arsenal, where the Portuguese defender showcased his prowess in marshaling the Gunners’ attack.
Speaking on the TNT Sports panel alongside Laura Woods and Martin Keown, Ferdinand highlighted Pepe’s remarkable performance at the age of 40, becoming the oldest player to feature in the Champions League.
After the match, Ferdinand caught up with Pepe, expressing his amazement at the defender’s enduring fitness and mental strength.
“I think he’s 41 on Monday. It’s ridiculous to think how he’s getting his body through,” Ferdinand remarked, to which Pepe responded confidently, “I’m still strong!” Keown also emphasized the mental aspect of Pepe’s game, noting its significance at this stage of his career.
Pepe’s longevity can be attributed to his consistent routines and mindset developed during his tenure at Real Madrid. Despite his age, he remains a crucial figure for Porto, having made 23 appearances this season under Sergio Conceicao.
Meanwhile, Arsenal must regroup swiftly as they prepare to face Newcastle United in the Premier League. Mikel Arteta expressed disappointment with his team’s performance, acknowledging their dominance but lamenting their lack of aggression and purpose, especially in the first half.
