Roma dismissed coach Daniele De Rossi on Wednesday, which came as a surprise even though the team had not won any of their first four matches in the Italian league.
De Rossi, who used to be a captain for Roma, was hired in January to take over from the fired Jose Mourinho. He made a strong impression during the second half of last season, leading to a contract extension in June that runs through 2026-27.
“The club’s decision is made in the best interests of the team, to get back on the desired path as soon as possible at a time when the season is still in its early stages,” Roma stated.
“A heartfelt thank you to Daniele, who will always be at home at the Giallorossi club, for the work done in recent months with passion and dedication.”
Roma also mentioned that “communication regarding the team’s technical guidance will follow.”
The team will face Serie A leader Udinese on Sunday.
Ivan Jurić, who previously coached Genoa, Hellas Verona, and Torino, is close to finalizing a deal to replace De Rossi, according to Gazzetta dello Sport. Jurić led Torino for the last three seasons, achieving 10th-place finishes in his first two years and ninth place last season.
This marks the first coaching change in Serie A this season.
After starting the season with a scoreless draw against Cagliari, Roma lost 2-1 at home to Empoli. They also had draws against Juventus (0-0) and Genoa (1-1), leaving them with only three points and in 16th place.
De Rossi had improved Roma’s attacking play compared to Mourinho’s defensive style, but this season the team has only scored two goals.
Next week, Roma will begin its Europa League campaign against Athletic Bilbao at the Olimpico.
Romelu Lukaku’s loan at Roma ended after last season, but talented striker Paulo Dybala decided to stay with the club after thinking about a move to Saudi Arabia.
