Toronto Blue Jays relief pitchers Jordan Romano and Erik Swanson are likely to start the season on the injured list, which is a significant setback for the team’s bullpen.
Romano, who is an All-Star closer, has been dealing with inflammation in his right elbow. Swanson, a key setup man, has been slowed down by inflammation in his right forearm.
With the opening day approaching on Thursday against Tampa Bay, manager John Schneider mentioned to reporters in Florida that Romano and Swanson may be placed on the IL.
However, there was some positive news for the Blue Jays regarding their top starter, Kevin Gausman. He made his Grapefruit League debut against Pittsburgh, pitching three solid innings.
Gausman, who had been dealing with shoulder fatigue, had an impressive performance, striking out seven batters and not issuing any walks. He allowed only one run and three hits.
Considering Gausman’s strong outing and his track record as a two-time All-Star and last year’s third-place finisher in the AL Cy Young Award voting, there’s a chance he might start the season in the rotation instead of being placed on the IL.
Romano has been a reliable closer for the Blue Jays, saving 36 games in each of the past two seasons and earning All-Star honors both years. In 2023, he posted a 5-7 record with a 2.90 ERA and 72 strikeouts in 59 innings.
Similarly, Swanson has been a valuable asset in the bullpen, going 4-2 with a 2.97 ERA while leading the team with 29 holds and also recording four saves in 69 appearances.
