The Green Bay Packers have suspended wide receiver Romeo Doubs for one game due to conduct detrimental to the team, just ahead of their matchup with the Los Angeles Rams. Doubs missed two days of practice and team meetings, which initially were reported as personal absences.
However, reports suggest that Doubs was frustrated with his lack of involvement in the team’s passing game, leading to the suspension. Neither Doubs nor his agent responded to requests for comment, but it was clarified that the absence was unrelated to injury or family matters.
Packers General Manager Brian Gutekunst explained that Doubs’ actions negatively impacted the team, necessitating the suspension. Gutekunst expressed disappointment but emphasized that the organization looks forward to Doubs’ return next week, viewing him as a valuable team member.
Head Coach Matt LaFleur had previously labeled Doubs as “day-to-day” and listed him as doubtful for the Rams game. Doubs was present for Wednesday’s practice but missed Thursday and Friday sessions, with no confirmation of his presence at the facility on Saturday.
In addition to Doubs’ absence, the Packers are likely to be without wide receiver Christian Watson due to a sprained ankle. Doubs, who ranks second on the team with 20 catches for 169 yards, has not yet scored a touchdown this season.
The Packers have faced challenges with their passing game, as starting quarterback Jordan Love missed two games, leading to a run-heavy offense. Despite Doubs receiving a fair number of targets, his role in the offense has not been as impactful as expected.
Last season, Doubs was a key contributor to the Packers’ offense, leading the team in targets and finishing second in receptions and yards. He tied for the team lead with eight touchdowns and played all 17 games.
His promising performance last year raised questions about whether the Packers had a clear No. 1 receiver, but Doubs emphasized a team-focused mindset during training camp, stating that individual goals could detract from the collective success.
Doubs’ suspension marks the second such instance for the Packers in the last year, following cornerback Jaire Alexander’s one-game suspension for similar reasons in December.
This suspension will cost Doubs $54,722, or 1/18th of his base salary. The Packers have made roster adjustments in response, promoting cornerback Robert Rochell and fullback Andrew Beck from the practice squad for the game against the Rams, without adding a wide receiver to replace Doubs.
