Cristiano Ronaldo did not score, and Portugal lost its perfect record in the Nations League after a 0-0 draw against Scotland on Tuesday.
Portugal had won its first three matches in the tournament but could not find a way to score against the Scots at Hampden Park in Glasgow.
Ronaldo, who has 133 international goals, had a few good chances to score but was frustrated with the referee after the game. He left the field with sarcastic applause, waving his arms and giving a thumbs down.
Portugal had previously defeated Croatia, Scotland, and Poland in Group A1, where it still leads with 10 points, three ahead of Croatia and six ahead of Poland.
Scotland remains in last place with just one point. They came into the match on a nine-game winless streak and had lost four games in a row.
“There was a lot missing for Portugal tonight,” said midfielder Bernardo Silva. “We lacked intensity, didn’t attack at the right moments. We leave here frustrated.” The top two teams in each group will move on to the knockout stage.
In other news, Spain reached the quarterfinals after Álvaro Morata scored about ten minutes after missing a penalty kick, leading Spain to a 3-0 victory over Serbia. This was their third straight win in the Nations League.
Morata sent his penalty over the crossbar in the 54th minute, then scored Spain’s second goal in the 65th minute at the Nuevo Arcangel stadium in Cordoba.
“I missed a penalty but ended up scoring,” Morata said. “We are in the knockout stages again. It seems easy but it’s not; we need to give value to our achievements.”
Aymeric Laporte scored the first goal for Spain just five minutes into the match. The defending champions started with a 0-0 draw against Serbia and then beat Switzerland and Denmark in Group A4.
Spain leads the group with 10 points, three more than Denmark, which drew 2-2 against last-place Switzerland.
Serbia is in third place with four points from the draw against Spain and a win over Switzerland, which remains without a win.
Serbia was a man down starting from the 76th minute after Strahinja Pavlovic was sent off for a sliding tackle on an opponent. Álex Baena scored Spain’s third goal from the resulting free kick.
