Rookie Federico Redondo scored his first two career goals in the second half, after setting up Diego Gómez for a goal in the first half, helping Inter Miami secure a 3-1 win over Toronto FC on Wednesday night.
The game remained scoreless until Redondo assisted Gómez for a goal in the 43rd minute, giving Inter Miami a 1-0 lead at halftime. This marked Gómez’s third goal of the season and Redondo’s third assist.
Redondo scored his two goals within six minutes. The 21-year-old midfielder first scored in the 53rd minute with an assist from defender Julian Gressel, extending the lead to two goals. He then found the net again in the 59th minute, assisted by Gómez and Gressel, making it 3-0.
Gómez now has six assists this season, while Gressel has contributed 12. Gressel has assisted in five consecutive matches, a feat matched in league history only by Lionel Messi and his teammates.
Toronto managed to avoid a shutout when Derrick Etienne Jr. scored in the 80th minute, assisted by Jahkeele Marshall-Rutty and Kosi Thompson. This was Etienne’s third goal of the season.
Inter Miami goalkeeper Drake Callendar made three saves, marking his 100th appearance for the club. Striker Robert Taylor also made his 100th appearance when he substituted for Gómez in the 80th minute.
Toronto’s Sean Johnson saved two shots.
Luis Suárez made his return to Inter Miami in the second half, after playing in the Copa America for Uruguay. Meanwhile, Messi, who participated in the Copa America for Argentina, is sidelined indefinitely due to a ligament injury in his right ankle sustained during a match against Colombia in the final.
