Manchester United legend Roy Keane has offered insights into Jurgen Klopp’s decision to step down as Liverpool manager at the end of the 2023-24 season, expressing that he wasn’t taken aback by the announcement.
Klopp’s decision, unveiled on Friday, January 26, surprised many fans, considering his influential tenure since joining the club in 2015.
Keane, speaking on Sky Bet’s Stick to Football podcast (via Liverpool Echo), shared his perspective on Klopp’s choice, stating, “I wasn’t shocked [at the Klopp news]. In football, with managers and the stresses and personalities of them, I just wasn’t that shocked, I don’t know what it was.”
He lauded Klopp’s managerial prowess and personal attributes, remarking, “He’s been brilliant, talking about management he’s obviously got to win football matches but the way he comes across [is amazing].”
Reflecting on Klopp’s early days at Liverpool, Keane recalled a significant incident that showcased the manager’s character: “One of his first games, they drew at home to West Brom, and he got all the players to [go over and celebrate with the fans] – he was trying to build something and was getting some top players in. I’ve been really drawn towards his interviews, he’s a proper natural.”
Liverpool’s recent performance, notably a 4-1 victory over Chelsea, underscored their dominance in the Premier League. With 51 points from 22 matches, they lead the table, maintaining a five-point gap over second-placed Manchester City.
