Rudi Völler is confirmed to continue as the sporting director of the German men’s national soccer team until the 2026 World Cup. However, the future of coach Julian Nagelsmann is still uncertain.
Völler was brought in early last year, initially just until this year’s European Championship, following Germany’s disappointing exit from the 2022 World Cup. He played a key role in hiring Nagelsmann in September to replace Hansi Flick.
Despite a slow start, Nagelsmann guided Germany to victory in friendly matches against France and the Netherlands last month, boosting morale ahead of Euro 2024, which Germany will host.
However, Nagelsmann’s contract only extends until the end of the tournament, and there are rumors of interest from top European clubs.
Völler, who won the World Cup as a player in 1990 and coached Germany to the World Cup final in 2002, expressed his enjoyment in his role as sporting director, stating that he initially felt obligated but now looks forward to the upcoming challenges, including the European Championship in Germany.
Before Nagelsmann’s appointment, Völler briefly served as caretaker coach for one game, overseeing a victory against France in September.
Germany’s next matches are friendly games against Ukraine on June 6 and Greece four days later, leading up to the European Championship. They have been drawn into a group with Scotland, Hungary, and Switzerland.
