When the relationship between the Broncos and quarterback Russell Wilson soured late in the 2023 regular season, clear signs were pointing to his potential next move. It was understood that if released by the Broncos, he would accept the league minimum for 2024, given the $39 million owed to him by Denver.

Moreover, he showed keen interest in joining the Raiders, a top competitor of the Broncos. Now that the Broncos have made their intentions known, the question remains whether Wilson will indeed sign for just $1.21 million on a one-year deal with a new team.

Why would he settle for such a low figure? With $39 million already coming his way, accepting less ensures more resources for his new team to bolster its roster. Conversely, it increases the financial burden on the Broncos.

However, there’s a potential downside to such a bargain deal. Wilson could be misled about his status as the starter by a team looking to sign him.

They might promise him the starting role only to backtrack once he’s signed. In that scenario, Wilson’s options would be limited.

For Wilson to commit to any team, he’ll need assurance that he’s the starter for the 2024 season and beyond. Performance on the field will also play a crucial role in solidifying his position.

Nevertheless, Wilson at $1.21 million is a steal. Any team in need of stability at the quarterback position should be interested, including the Vikings if Kirk Cousins departs for Atlanta. Wilson, being healthier and younger, presents a compelling option, especially with his ability to execute Coach Kevin O’Connell’s plays effectively.

Teams like the Patriots, Steelers, Raiders, and potentially the Bucs (if they don’t re-sign Baker Mayfield) should also be eyeing Wilson.

Regardless of where he lands, Wilson will hit free agency between Wednesday, March 13, and Sunday, March 17. Armed with a $39 million payout and a low salary demand, he’s likely to attract plenty of interest.
