Russell Wilson Rumors: Broncos to Take $53M Salary Cap Hit in 2024 After Releasing QB

Russell Wilson’s absence from the Denver Broncos lineup in the upcoming 2024 season doesn’t absolve them from the financial repercussions of their past decision to acquire him.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Broncos have opted to release Wilson with a post-June 1 designation. However, they’ll still shoulder a significant portion of the cap hit, spreading it out over the next two years. In 2024, they’ll absorb $53 million of the hit, followed by $32 million in 2025.

Had Wilson’s tenure in Denver been more successful, perhaps the financial blow wouldn’t sting as much. Unfortunately, his performance fell short of expectations, marked by an 11-19 record as a starter over two seasons. This outcome was a stark departure from his illustrious career with the Seattle Seahawks, where he earned nine Pro Bowl nods and secured a Super Bowl championship.

Now, with Wilson departing for the Pittsburgh Steelers, hopes are high that he can recapture the form that made him a standout in Seattle. Joining the AFC North team at 35, Wilson faces stiff competition from Kenny Pickett for the starting quarterback position. Yet, the prospect of working alongside talents like George Pickens and Najee Harris in the Steelers’ offense may facilitate his resurgence.

Nevertheless, for the Broncos, the financial ramifications remain a bitter pill to swallow, regardless of Wilson’s departure.
