After assisting on Tyler Bertuzzi’s goal that tied the game with 31 seconds left in regulation, Ryan Donato scored the winning goal in the shootout, helping the Chicago Blackhawks come back to win 4-3 against the Los Angeles Kings.
Chicago was down 2-0 and had only eight shots on goal after two periods, but they came alive in the third period.
Just 3:57 into the final frame, Nick Foligno pushed in a rebound from his own shot that Kings goalie Darcy Kuemper (17 saves) allowed to slip behind him.
A little over two minutes later, the Blackhawks took advantage of a Kings line change. Lukas Reichel made a backhand pass to Craig Smith in the high slot, and Smith scored with a one-timer past Kuemper.
However, the Kings regained the lead with 8:12 left in the third when Phillip Danault scored on a rebound for his first goal of the season. But the Blackhawks responded with less than a minute remaining, as Bertuzzi tipped in Donato’s shot to tie the game at 3-3.
In the shootout, Connor Bedard, Teuvo Teravainen, and Donato all scored, while Petr Mrazek made 37 saves for Chicago.
This victory improved the Blackhawks’ record to 2-2-0 on their five-game trip and handed Los Angeles their first home loss of the season. The Kings had two goals from Alex Laferriere.
The Kings quickly opened the scoring just 3:57 into the game. On the power play, Anze Kopitar passed the puck through Chicago’s Alex Vlasic’s legs to Laferriere, who tipped it in easily.
Los Angeles had a 12-4 advantage in shots on goal during the first period and didn’t let the Blackhawks take their first shot until 8:50 remained in that period.
Kuemper helped maintain the Kings’ lead in the final seconds of the first by stopping a shot from Smith during a two-on-one chance.
Laferriere scored again with just 1:23 left in the second period. After Bertuzzi lost the puck along the boards, Alex Turcotte took control in the Blackhawks’ zone and centered the puck for Laferriere, who wristed it past Mrazek.
